Hi everyone.
I recently sold my Civic Type R and am looking at buying a GTI which my girlfriend will mostly be driving but she only holds a full UK auto licence. Can the DSG Golf GTI be driven with an auto licence? I phoned the DVLA and they don't even know!
-
I pretty sure she could drive it. If it has no clutch pedal and has a 'D' position, then it's classed as an auto.

Now that's interesting
MY guess is they wont allow her to use it. because she is able to physically put it in manual, and you cant in a auto obviously.

I was also curious about this when insuring my DSG. It came up on the insurers system as an auto so I would have though your g/f will be covered with her auto license.

Good shout Clive i remember when getting quotes, insurance companies could not find DSG on the system but found it under auto.
-
Also on the V5C/log book I am sure it says Auto as well.
-
Thanks for the replies, it is a tricky one! How would I find out for sure? I don't want to buy one then find out she can't drive it.
-
2 pedals = auto.
3 pedals = manual
It matters not how the engine does it .....

D V L A  Sorry just read your original post. :embarassed:

D V L A
Tried twice mate, two different people, neither had a clue

....The Mk5 Golf DSG is defined as "Automatic" - Pure and simple. It's also how the insurance companies define it.
We know it's rather more than just that, but let's not confuse their poor ignorant bureaucratic brains!
-
As you say you cant just risk it you could try the police they might know the actual law.
Surely the Divvey L a should have it in writing what actually constitutes auto/manual they must all be X VW dealer's

....The Police won't know - Who in the Police Service are you going to ask? They'll tell you to go and check your DVLA Registration Certificate.
I'll spell it out again - Those of you who have a DSG, get out your DVLA Registration Certificate....Section 4.D.2 Model/Type....What does it say?....
AUTO
Which is an abbreviation for Automatic.

Thanks RedRobin. I just phoned VW UK Customer Service and the bloke said he was 'pretty sure' it was classed as an auto and we'd be ok.
-
Good question
For the purposes of a person who drives on an automatic car UK licence a DSG will be okay. The automatic driving test discludes clutch hill holds (achieving bite point) and clutch use for the purpose of changing gears. Remember in a manual and an Auto you still have to change the stick position and so the fact that you can change gears manually doesn't matter - otherwise most auto's would fall into this category as in most standard autos you can select to hold the car in second and third, in CVT's some cars have a + and - selector. Audi's multitronic boxes also have this function too.
-
Yup, agreed with all the others - with specific regard to the driving licence issue, the DSG is most definately classed as an Auto.
And in simple laymans terms - the best autobox in the world. Period.
-
I agree auto, just like all the others, vauxhall easytronic, think merc do one too, deffo auto

....And also known (I think!) as S-tronic in the world of Audi.

....Yuk! Do Vauxhall really call it "easytronic"!? - What a horrible term!

-
....Gaz - Has your S3 got DSG aka S-tronic?
I fancy one of these if it had S-tronic : -

Are you trying to get new recruits for audi-sport.net
-
Oh "sensodrive" in the Wonderful Citroen C2 vtr i once owned. You could scratch your a$$ cheeks whilst driving and still would be thinking about changing up a gear!.
-
no not recruiting sorry pal, none of the other systems match up to DSG

I thought S-Tronic was'nt available till January on all S3's (3 or 5dr) ? :undecided:
There's some good Contract Hire deals on the new Sportback S3 at the moment - might be interested myself if S-tronic was available now
-
S-Tronic is just another name for DSG

....Evo magazine review described the latest S3 as unexciting.

The Vauxhall/Opel "Easytronic" is not a DSG-type dual-clutch 'box. It is purely a conventional construction manual gearbox, with a conventional construction single plate dry clutch. It looses the clutch pedal, and the clutch operation and gear selection are controled by a mechatronics module. The floor shifter is similar to any auto, and it also has a tip function.
The original generation Easytronic was utterly horrible. Whenever you were accelerating, using either part- or full-throttle, every time it changed gear, you would virtually head-but the windscreen! The later ones are slightly better, though to attempt to compare them with DSG is like chalk and cheese!

Maybe because the S3 is such an extremely accomplished and refined car - with no rough or raw edges?
-
You all drive automatics haha !!
(I wish I had DSG lol)
