On reversing my beast makes a kinda of rotating clunky noise... any thoughts?

Have you the sterring pulled one way or the other when this is happening? If so it could be a CV joint.

Not that I have really noticed to be honest, I have been trying not to reverse much!
Its only when its in gear though. If I reverse and take it out of gear and roll then it doesn't make the noise, so makes me think its the box.... which i'm hoping it isn't.

Definitely a "rotating" noise? sometimes the anti roll bar will clunk in reverse if the bushes are shot.

Ummm.. I think so yeah.
I'll have a look at that though, the front camber is slightly off so may mean the bushes need doing?
Thanks, gives me a job for the weekend.

have you checked the engine mounts? mine used to do it until i renewed the mounts!

Front one has a very slight amount of play in it, was going to change it anyway so may do that first then. I was planning on just jacking the engine and changing it on the drive....

Actually i'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet but it sounds like a chipped tooth on your reverse gear, very very common MK3 GTi's and we had to have a new gearbox on my bro's MK3 because of this very problem.

I was hoping it wasn't that!!!
I may get a quote for a new gear box though, is there a code that I should ask for?

I had this with mine. Went to gearbox specialist and he said the flywheel had a high spot and that when the clutch was replaced (prior to my ownership) that it should have been skimmed. He said drop it in 2nd before reverse and it will stop flywheel spinning and the crunch. Works for me.

Mine also had a new gear box put in just before I bought it, I'll try that on the way home then, thanks!
