Does anybody know if such a thing as a steel wheel picture gallery exists showing all the variations and listing what they were fitted on???
I want to choose some winter steels for my rat motor and I've seen plenty I like but can never remember what car they were standard fitting for. I remember seeing a gallery listing all the standard alloy wheel types.

ETKA illustrates them.

steel wheels are crap.

yep

actually the only steel wheels that rock are the golf country steels. the rest are cop-out easy option.... even G60 steels!
-
which oens are the country ones i cant think
-
they were only on the golf country 'chrome' i believe and here they are:

those look gash, just like the rest of the car, what was the point to it
(sorry in advance if iv offended anyone)
-
theyw ere on a syncro on ebay the other day IIRC.
Theyre steels but 15x7J standard and are chromed.. cost around 225 each genuine :O
-
looks like they've got a deep dish and a kind of ATS Cup thing going on.
-
so apart from the general consensus that everybody (ok a couple) thinks they are crap does anybody actually know of a site with loads of steel pics???
I've had a look on etka DH and although useful to get the general idea, photos would be a lot better than line drawings.
Oh and crap or not I'd much rather run steels on my rat through the winter than my bbs.

Crap or not is functionally defined by what the wheel weighs. The weight of your wheels has a profound effect on the handling of your car.
As some may have noticed I've started weighing wheels, to find out what wheels are going to be functionally better. I'm interested to weigh a G60 steel as I should hate to think I'm discounting them as a choice just because steels = heavy when they might not be.

i think i know the site you mean tobz, i will try and find the link :)
-
nice one john I knew somebody helpful would be along in the end ;)

I had steels on my Classic Mini a few years ago. They were similar offset to the previous alloys I had and had the same tyres but I never got round to weighing them! However, i used to drive that car like I stole it and never noticed any difference between the steels or the alloys. However, they were 70's technology, so that could make a bit of difference anyway! I just thought it looked better (and a bit harder) than the Minilights you usually see...

They are massively heavy trust me, mine have tyres on so, can't weigh just the wheel, but they must be nearly twice the weight of my BBS RS, I know that much.
Don't bother as a track wheel. I only have mine because they are a cheap 'cop out' as Joe says !

Don't sweat it. Steelies are fine for the road - you'll never notice the difference and I think they can look good. If you're after a track car, then lighter weight wheels are a must.

yep, but alloys are better...

*mental note*
g60 steels on mk1 to annoy joe
-
alloys are no doubt better weight wise.. and you're definitely not going to get a load of dumbo-s at work screaming "where are your hubcaps mate?!?! where are they?!!? did someone nick 'em?!?!"
other than that, i like 'em

To be honest some steel wheels look the business, and from a weight point of view I'm sure there's plenty of aftermarket alloys which are just as, if not more heavy than standard steelies.
Looking at various magazines at the mo it seems that a more "Retro" look is coming back into fashion, i.e. wide or deep dish steel rims with low profile stretched rubber. Some look awesome!
The end of Chavvy alloys maybe??
BBS will always look the nuts though.

TBH buy whatever you like the look of. Steels can look good under certain circumstances (I loved the white 14's on my passat) but other times they just look cheap.
