Evening all :)
My car's in need of a coolant change/thermostat replacement/radiator flush and I'm just wondering if those 2 products are worth the expense or will a generic vw thermostat suffice?
I've had a search and can't really find anything other than like one guy saying "why not buy these..."
Also is it worth buying coolant from vw?
Cos I get discountz at Halfords so it may be a bit cheaper getting it from there?
But obviously I'd only buy it if it was good enough quality
Cheers

I think the fan switch is different spec? 2 pin not 3 pin or somethin
-
I suppose me posting links would have been helpful
Sorry!
Links now in OP
It says it's 3 pin so it should work?

you can buy a 71deg stat for less i think..
71deg for summer standard for winter my boss told me
-
Ahh nice one
Where'd I get a 71deg stat from?
So that'd mean changing your coolant every 6 months?
How often are you meant to change it?

according to awesome gti:
"A 180 degree F thermostat (standard is 195F) is a must to additionally bring down engine temperature. This is the perfect part to with our low temperature fan switch, all designed to prolong engine life and smooth operation on hot days"
...so this is a lower temp stat than standard anyway, same counts for the fan switch
-
Aye!
Just wondering if its worth getting a thermostat that operates at a lower temperature, and whether its actually beneficial?

if your engine runs hot like mine then yes (sits around 100c oil temp on the motorway, up to 108 in bad traffic), but if you have no problem with it then i dont see the point. engines burn fuel better when hotter so i would expect lower mpg with the lower temp stat and fan switch... if that makes sense!
-
It did have overheating problems but a replacement black temp sender seems to have sorted that!
So it might be a good idea
Surely it couldn't have any negative effects on the engine?

i had a fiesta that had thermostat problems (ran too cool) and all the oil breathers etc got completely blocked with 'mayo' from moisture build-up and it ran like crap!
my mate Google came up with this explanation:
higher temps = best life and power due to friction and thermal losses at lower temps
-
Thanks for that!
Looks like I may be better off going for the vw jobby then!
-
yeah funily enough VW designed the cooling system to keep the engine running at the optimum temp for efficiency
for heavily modified/race spec engines a lower temp stat/switch can be usefull however, but if your car is running around half way on the temp gauge under normal conditions then there is absolutly no need :)

...and high(ish) oil temp means...? :undecided:
assuming oil level and grade is correct?
only other things wrong are coke'd up head and oil pump on its way out.
water temp is always below half way even with oil temp at 108 in traffic
-
how high is high-ish? ;)

If your concerned about cooling, I would look at an uprated fan e.g. the dual fan passat jobbys. That way the fan has got the oomph to cool things down when needed, but you've not fecked around with the system.
And I can't for the life of me see the point of an uprated thermostat... So it lets water around the radiator sooner, so what, unless I've missed the point?! The only thing I can think of is if you thrash the car from cold or its massively tuned, you might get overheating while the standard thermostat is still opening (unlikely surely!).
-
uprated thermostats are a load of crap, they don't increase the efficiency of a well maintained cooling system in any way what so ever. all they do is keep the water in then enigne at a lower temperature the only time this chould be of use is if the enigne is really gunged up and the gunk is so stoppign heat transferring to the water as it should but flushing the enigne is afar better solution.
enigne's are built to quite fine tolerances and as parts expand as they warm these clearances change slightly in theory to the optimal amount so an engine should run with the stat it's designed for and if extra cooling is required a bigger radiator should be used. high performance engines tend to run hotter anyway

is that 'hot'?
or is it a case of 'how long is a piece of string?'
-
thats not hot at all! pretty much normal :)
-
life in the old b*tch yet then!
-
Well I ordered a VW thermostat today :nerd:
Thanks for the info guys!
Anyone used halfords coolant?
Should I avoid?
-
should be fine, but check how much it is compared to G12 or the like from GSF! their oil for example is quite expensive when you compare the price of a bottle of fuchs from gsf.
-
Sound!
Just I still get a bit of the old staff discount from halfords
