Hoping someone can help me with this one!
I've got a 1990 Mk2 GTI and the boot the plugs the hole in the bulkhead where the steering col passes through was missing. I got in touch with GPC and they have sent me the relevant part but I can't work out how it goes on???? The part is basically a rubber boot with a circular hole at one end and then two square flaps at the other. I assumed it went inside the car but now I think it may be fitted from underneath???
Any help or better still a diagram would be great- looked in the Haynes Manual but it doesn't show the boot at all!!!
Cheers
Alex

Heh - drop subframe, release bolt that secures column to rack and just slip the boot over.
Once done, go get your tracking reset - it'll probably be out.

Thanks for the feedback- I'm not exactly a mechanic so is this something best left to my local garage?? And if so will it cost me mega bucks- I only wanted to fit it to stop the engine noise from coming in to the car!

Mate, just pay for it, got a subframe of the last guy who posted and fitted it, hell on earth doing jobs like this with just a couple of feet to crawl under on your own drive.

no need to drop the subframe at all, can get to it from above. cut the old boot up and remove the nut/bolt from the universal joint. now go inside the car & remove the dash under tray. At the base of the column you'll see the other half of the universal joint, undo and remove the nut/bolt here and see if you have enough clearance to release it from the rack, I'm pretty sure you wont but its worth a try!
If not, remove the lower half of the ign stalk surround and disconnect all the wiring plugs from the stalks & ign switch. Now undo the allen bolt you can see under the column into the metal ign switch surround, release the steering lock, grab the steering wheel and pull it towards you, the entire column will come out :)
Now you should be able to pull the UJ off the rack, swap the new boot on and refit the UJ to the rack and bolt it up. Secure the boot over the rack and go inside the car, repeat everything you did the opposite way round, and che ck the top half of the boot is fixed properly into the firewall if you can see it thru/past the carpet & insulation :)

I did wonder if it could be done without dropping the subframe. I've got a relatively free weekend so it looks like I know what I'll be doing........back to work on Monday with bashed knuckle but a quieter car

yep deffo is, i used that procedure to remove a pas uj out of a 1.8 carbed jetta, engine was still in it and everything :)

its worth bearing in mind that the column is telescopic, so if the spline on the bottom of the column wont reach all the way into your UJ when refitting, then no doubt the column has shortened itself during/after removal! might need a hammer to extend it again as it will probably be stiff. my old project spent 6 months with no column fitted for precisely this reason, and i couldnt work out why! :embarassed:

Thanks for all the advice- I'll post an update once I get it done!
The part itself was £28 from GPC.
Hopefully this is about the last job to get the car back to being pretty much as it left the production line- well other than the lowered suspension, stainless steel exhaust and modified air intake that is

good point, there is an easy way to extend it though! bolt up the botrtom of the UJ to the rack, then the uj loosely to the column without bolting it anywhere else. fit the wheel loose then give it a few tugs, this will extend it :)
