Title: New Scirocco driven.
Post by: MR C on 02 September 2008, 19:32
Just got back from having a spin in new Scirocco.Sadly no DSG or leather and in dowdy red. Got to say not over impressed.Granted, i did not go mental with it but my GTI felt so much sportier as soon as i got back in it.   Inside the cabin was very gloomy especially in the back. I think the panoramic roof is a must.
Pity i couldn't give it a good thrashing as it might have given me a better vibe. Guess i'll have to wait till new GTI comes out.

Interesting . . . .

Do you think it is the lower, coupe-style roofline which makes the interior gloomy?  The one good thing about the Golf is its good headroom, which even with the GTIs anthracite rooflining, doesn't make it too opressive.

Same here, had a good look around one at ED38 and was somewhat underwhelmed  I should be getting one to play with soon so will make a more informed decision then!

It's not a *bad* looking motor but it just seems like it's missing something.

Are they suposed to be doing a GTI version of it??

....Where did you get that information?

Having driven the new Scirocco for half a day and plenty of R32's, a R36 engine in a Scirocco will feel far too heavy imo.

Thanks for the review.

The coast road to Bridport is great!  i used to love that road at 6 in the morning on my bike, then up the A37 to work.  The trip was about 40 miles, but work is only 7 miles down the road!

Great review RR.

seen a few now, i like the front but not the back or the sides, also there is a STUPID amount of gap between the tyer and the arch and also the side skirts and the rear bumper look alot lower than the front bumper wich just throws the look compleatly off

Saw one on the road recently and gotta say it looked great when it was rolling, however when it pulled up next to me at the lights I was left feeling rather dissappointed!! Sits waaaaaay too high and just looks, well, a bit weird!! I really fancied one in white but after closer inspection I will definately be sticking with the ED!!

Well it has that active suspension stuff as standard so I guess not via coilovers. I'm sure someone will come up with something clever for adjustable hieght kits but I imagine some form of lowering springs should be possible. Angle grinder?

....Logical because of the switchable Comfort | Normal | Sport settings it has. The Rocco GT24 race version would have been built from scratch without all that stuff.

I hope VW don't put this rubbish on the next GTI !!

....The "R32 lump" is over, finished, not going to be continued - It's general knowledge.

Really I never knew that. Maybe they will bring out a new turbo'd motor to compete with the new RS and Astra VXR etc?

why didn`t they put the ed30 lump in there, or can you get one with the 230bhp engine?

....It would be so easy and logical wouldn't it, but this is VW we are talking about and they don't seem to follow what enthusiasts want. Wagen Of The People and all that.

The engine in the new S3 would be even better.

It's all about fuel economy and emissions nowadays.

I thought it was going to be the r36 lump put in it? I even asked at VW and yes they know nothing really, but he said he reckons 1 year and they'll have a real hot hatch version.

I think it's more likely to get the uprated 4 pot turbo from the S3 and 4WD ala the aledged new .:R version of the MKVI. I don't think we'll see a six pot Rocco in any flavour at all.

....I saw your pics comparing your Rrado with the new Rocco, Nick, and the thought now comes to my mind: What if VW were to produce a new Corrado?

I also wonder how quickly the aftermarket manufacturers will start offering mods for the new Rocco.

Well the Rado was supposed to replace the the MKII Scirocco but they actually continued sid eby side from 88 till 92. I'm not sure even VW would be mad enough to produce 2 "Coupes" at the same time again.

I thought the Corrado was actually a successor to the original Scirrocco, only using a new badge name?

I'v always like the Corrado, if they had done a new version of that, then I think it would have been amazing! I'v not got any time for the original Scirroco, I'd be tempted to eat my own finger than own one! lol
