Title: Old Corrado meets New Scirocco
Post by: Horney on 02 September 2008, 18:33
I popped into my local VW Dealer on my home to pick up a new thermostat and seal and saw a New Scirocco parked up outside and a space next to it. I couldn't resist as it was even the same colour as my (dirty!) Rado.

Gutted that for the first time in ages I'd not taken my DSLR to work so only crappy phone pics I'm afraid!

that rado needs rims.

is it just me or does that rocco look really fat? i've seen a red one at my local vw and it doesn't look half as bad.

They're no that bad! I admit they're not the best but they've grown on me enough not to rush into swapping them for something else for the sake of it and wait until I find some that I really want and can afford.

Saw a Rocco at E38 and tbh they do look a hell of a lot better in the flesh this one was bright white and looked cool as for a bog standard car.

punt them on ebay and buy some g60s/sebrings/estos with the money easy.

G60's too common, Sebrings it had them as standard so no thanks and same for the estos. Besides they're all 15's and they look lost in the Rado arches unless it's decked and and I'm not slamming this car as I don't want to compromise the superb handling for the sake of looking a bit cooler. It's all ready dropped 40mm and has upradated shocks and the ride is spot on. Not to hard but with little body roll. To keep that and go lower I'd nee coilovers that would cost about 1/2 what I paid for the car itself. Money I don't have.

Sebrings are heavy too TBH - the 5 spoke SEAT rims I have on at the moment deleted the lead-footed-ness my car had previously - it is astonishingly transformed.

Quite seriously - find out wheel weights and make a choice with some of that information behind you.  1kg off the unsprung weight is the same as 7kg off the car - you'll really notice it.

Bummer that you're on 4X100 - narrows your choice a bit in the sizes you're looking for.  Swapping to 5X100 hubs might well be a good call - much wider choice in 16"...... that said, you may find there's some nice 16" linear spoke SEAT rims out there - from the ABF cars.

The Scirocco looks like it's on stilts alongside your car, Nick.  Now you've got a car that handles you coming out to Germany in 09?

16s are ghey, there's no point in that much rotational mass unless you have pointlessly huge brakes. i've got a set of 14s in my garage to try compared to the 15s, but would like to weight them first, and see if i can get some tarmac part worns or the like. obviously if i get 280mm stoppers they won't be an option any more.

and finally, you can't put seat rims on an oak green valver   i was looking for your wheel weight thread you started earlier but seems lost amidst a mass of spam.

Depends on the weight of the wheel, doesn't it?

195/50 R15 does seem to be THE size competition-wise - good tyres, cheap.

a 16" wheel the same weight as a 15" wheel will have more rotational mass because the majority of the weight is distributed around the rim.

Interesting stuff guys and something to keep in mind while wheel shopping next year.

DH, I would love a trip to the Ring next year and all being well I'll be in touch in the new year to sort dates and book time off work!

You reckon? I'm not sure it looks better, but it doesn't look bad next to it. Well apart from the fact it makes the Rado all of a sudden look very dated.

One problem that all manufacturers now face is the car safety bullsh!t that dictates all sorts of things e.g. the position of rear brake lights. These silly rules are a big part (but not the only reason) of why cars are starting to look similar.

For example... Have you noticed the growing height of car bonnets...  Pedestrian safety innit.

I love the new scirocco (although dont think the silver pictured above does much for it) and have had the pleasue of driving one and was very impressed. It felt quick, turned heads and although i didnt get the chance to push it that hard the handling felt very sharp. As stated earlier i think its definatly one of those cars that looks better in the metal. Grabbed a couple of pics of my mates one at the weekend (still prefer the look of the Corrado but then im probably a little biased ):

with mine:
