Due to an expanding dog and needing a bigger car, am thinking of a GTi T, V5 or V6
Performance and equipment level is important to me so really fancy the 4motion as I can just about cope with the petrol costs but can anyone give info on service intervals/maintenance costs and reliability please regarding all 3.
Also, what to look for when buying etc etc
Cheers,
Jon

I'd avoid the V5, TBH - They're thirsty & not very tunable. (Sound quite good, though).
If you're a standard man, then I'd get the V6 4M, but if you like modifications, then you can quite easily get the turbo quicker than the V6 (& still be more economical at the same time).
You can't beat that 6 cyl. growl, though.

I agree V5 not an option , ive had 1 because it was fully loaded but performance was poor.
If you say you can avoid fuel then V6 with the growl would be my choice,
But the 1.8T is so bullet proof that it will be the most reliable choice
If you look around you can get a fully loaded 1.8T with simular spec to v6. (IE leather winter pack with climate)

I would go 1.8T aswell mate V6's do sound good but you will never have the tuning potential of the turbo.

wrong wrong wrong wrong you NEED a 2.0 8 Valve gti the abuse you get for buying one is character building

wouldnt go v5
but the other two are good contenders guess it depends if you want that turbo sound or the grunt of the v6?? and weather you;d prefere front wheel drive or 4 motion

Cheers for the advice - I'll definitely rule out the V5 then.
It'd be a 'no brainer' for a turbo if it wasn't for the noises th V6 engine makes!
Would keep a V6 standard and unlikely to do any more than chip a turbo.
I'll keep looking around and see what pops up but need to straight swap for a 2002 clio 172 or wait a bit till I've got some cash to play with. I'm hoping people will be steering clear of V6's because of petrol prices and tax rise making them drop into budget so can do a swap with a dealer! No rush though - the dog can stay squashed in the boot!

You have at least gotta fit an exhaust to the V6 to hear that burble.

If you do go for the 4M, then I'd recommend a pre-March '01 for the cheaper tax!!
