Title: white worm on tailgate badge
Post by: No Golf Clubs at all on 01 September 2008, 19:59
Does anyone have any pics of white worm on a tailgate badge? I noticed something on my taigate badge/ boot release when looking at replacing with CF in the group buy. (see above sticky).

Warranty runs out on Thursday, car is booked in for something else on Wednesday, if its White Worm I want it fixed.  Will try and post a pic in a few minutes, failing that tomorrow am.

Update...ahead of my visit to the stealers tomorrow, thought I would take the car in and mention the white corrosion (worm) issue.

Their warranty dude came out and examined it, right away he said no worries we will warranty that for you...in fact, let me look at your centre caps....yep they are going too....now hows your front...nope that one is fine...so no problems sir, if I can get the parts it will be done tomorrow when your car is in for the work on the evap solenoid!!

Result...I like the raised vw emblem better too! :D first time I have ever had a good experience at a dealers...now could you imagine the same conversation happening on Friday 5th September?.. my VW warranty runs out on Thursday 4th at midnight.

A positive result I would say

Arnold Clark, Jordanhill, Glasgow.

I wouldnt normally recommend them though TBH they are grossly over priced. (£146 for 4 wheel alignment ffs) and my last service about 27,000 miles cost over £300! AND they couldn't work out what was wrong with my Cruise control..took an independent 5 mins to resolve a coding issue, whereas they wanted the car booked for 3 days!! lol...anyway, big shout for going the extra mile for warranty issues like this...its not often that a stealer gets a shout from me....

having said that, lets just see what happens next....after all, they are not actually on the car yet...  but you just never know, it may have restored my faith in them and one day in the not too distant future I may just be after another car..... :smug:

I noticed a small bit on the underside of my badge - I prefer the flush one though so it will stay until it becomes more obvious.

Was it worth not extending the warranty - so far yes.

i have an 05 gti and had white worm on centre caps and tailgate badge. I took it to Gilders in Sheffield and they replaced all centre caps and fitted later style badge no problem at all.

A good result then - providing they actually do the job!

Don't forget, all UK franchised VW dealers must now offer a price match for like-for-like work.  I'm sure there was sommat on www.Volkswagen.co.uk about this.

True to form my dealership failed to live up to their premature plaudits from yours truely

The wrong part was ordered! I think its the front desk that order the parts you know...and they ordered a GTI badge and NOT the tailgate emblem handle!! the result yet another disrupted day back to the dealers with no car at my disposal. Booked in for Thursday 11th September.

AND

The centre caps on my wheels, despite white worming are NOT covered under warranty...why? because you have R32 wheels sir and the car came with the standard GTI wheels at time of purchase.  The R32 wheels have been added afterwards...so they are not covered? No sir...

Oh well it only cost a fiver a corner to replace

Since this is a white worm thread heres a related question:

I do not know much about this so talking about alloy wheels:

- What causes it?

- Can/how is it prevented?

- Will my Pirelli alloys be prone to it? I know the Monzas are but not sure if mine will be or not!

Thanks

I can kind of see where the dealer is coming from on this one.

Since this is a white worm thread heres a related question:

I do not know much about this so talking about alloy wheels:

- What causes it? Oxidisation - air getting under the laquer and lifting it gradually

- Can/how is it prevented? - It can be prevented by not having MonzaII's  . Seriously, don't kerb them, be very gentle when cleaning them (no heavy duty brushes or grit sodden sponges) and don't use strong cleaning agents.

- Will my Pirelli alloys be prone to it? I know the Monzas are but not sure if mine will be or not! No, yours should be okay as they don't have a machined face and laquer, they are painted.
Thanks

Hope that helped

Yep Alan, whilst registering my disappointment I agreed with the stealer for once.  If the centres were the same size as the original wheels I could have argued that the caps were the original even though the wheels were not. However R32 different centre cap sizes from Monzas. No worries though £20 did the job.

Still on the other hand.....they were original VW parts and they were affected by the corrosion...

Just noticed mine has started to do it too and it's only 5 months old..
First warranty claim for mine then. Not bad considering it's done 13k without a hiccup I suppose..
