hi all i'm new to the forum but will be around for a while :)
i have a MK2 8valve GTi digifont (think it is spelt right )
i changed the clutch at the weekend and the car started ran and drove but then i washed the car and now non starting , if i run an earth lead from the battery to the engine then it turn's over but fuel pours out of the joint in the exhaust downpipe to the system
then if i pull the fuel pump relay out after a few turns the motor start's but if i plug the relay it bump stop's again and wont restart
HELP ME PLEASE LADS AND LASSES
P.S it is a left hand drive one as i live in holland (if this matter's)
cheers phil

your not going to like me saying this....
digifant dosen't like bad earth connections if you didn't refit the one from the back of the rocker cover the ecu is more than likely dead. they HATE havering that one disconnected it'll run for a short while but it'll fry the ecu, someone on here should be able to sort you out with a another one if that is the case
-
but i didn't have that one disconnected HMMMMMM
car's eh
-
Have you checked all your earths?
-
no not yet but tommorrow i will
where are they all ?
one on the gearbox , one on the rocker cover ?? and any more ??
-
I've no idea how many/where the earths are unfortunately, not in the Index of the Haynes manual either
Hopefully someone else can list them.
-
one from the bonet to the wing (not sure the importance of that one though)

mines been broken for 2 years and not caused any trouble. i think it has more to do with radio interferance :undecided:
-
turn the key 1 click, if fuel pump runs constantly you have a blown ecu. take all the wires off the battery/starter and alternator including the gearbox earth off and clean them up wi sandpaper till shiny and refit.
danny its not the rocker cover earth that blows the ecu its the main gearbox earth that normally does it :)
edit: rocker cover earth when missing normally sends the clocks a bit dappy, think its mainly for sensor earthing?
-
so drained 15ltrs of petrol from the sump today
with the price of it
fitted a new earth wire to the gearbox/ chassis/ bettery and a new to me ECU and bumf non start
thank you all for your help and remember it may look ok but it is pooped LOL
-
that'll be a mistake you wont make again eh
-
well it didn't work:(
the engine has no spark with the new ECU :(
so i need an ECU from a 1989 digifant golf GTi with the last 2 letter are BB but the VW dealer say's a FX will fit
PLEASE help again
-
Have you tried taking out a spark plug and check if it arcs?
Have you tried and tested the coil and king lead?
Being Dutch there must loads of mates with simular cars why don't you do a swap of componets to eliminate certain parts ECU, Hall Sender on another car would tell you right away if you have fried your ECU sounds like injector drivers might be burnt out hence dumpping of fuel in the head?
-
if i use my original ECU the car spark's but over fuels like hell (ecu failure) but if i fit another ECU from my mate with a scrap yard there is no spark
wrong number on the ECU i have found out today
-
all MK2 GTI digifant 2 ECUs are the same, part numbers may differ but they all work!
-
Yeah part numbers get you every time they look the same, but rarely are LOOL!
The best thing is to use a known ECU working on a car no point swapping rubbish for rubbish I've learnt the hard way!
Keep going you will get there mate
-
i have 3 ecu's ere all differant part number's tried them all and the only one that produces a spark is my old one , after asking a VW specialist he promises me they are differant
i'm just puzzled now bloody cars
-
if all 3 had 'digifant ii' on the front somewhere and came off uk cars they're the same.
if you can get me the part numbers off em, I'll check what they actually are.
-
one is 037 906 022BB (mine )
one is 037 906 022E (no spark)
and the other is in the car but is is really shedding it down outside   :grin:this one is silver and has bosch on it so i don't think this is a Digifant one :)
-
your old one is for cars with a retrofitted lambda probe, the one that doesnt spark is a proper UK spec ecu. do you have a cat or lambda?
-
nope no cat or lamda
but the car is a 1989 car so over ere it should have had a cat fitted but it has been taken off i assume
-
ah so you are not in england then?
-
no mate netherland's LOL sorry but i am english :) Expat
-
aha! I wouldnt have thought a lambda retrofit ecu would be significantly different to a 'normal' one, but it seems it is the case, unless there is something else wrong ;)
according to etka the ecu with part number 037 906 022BB can be replaced by:
037 906 022CT
037 997 022FX
there are probably more that will work made before the BB code ecu but I can only look forwards, not back!
-
thank you very much :)
i found a 037 906 022 CT on fleabay :)
dont suppose you have one ??
cheeRS phil
-
the digifant 2 ecu with lambda is very simalar to the non lambda one, TC's digi2 ecu runs lambda
-
yeah thats what I thought, etka has different numbers but assumed it was just a bit milder map for lambda or something. obv the ecu plugs are the same! plus when vw retrofitting a lambda dont want to be rippin out half car loom...
-
just thought in theory i have diagrams somewhere.
appently there are 4 maps stored on digi 2 ecu's so all the ecu's have the same maps but depending which ecu it is depends on whitch map it reads
-
lambda ecu
pin 25 - ignition output signal to control unit
pin 18 - ignition signal input from dizzy
pin 2 - lambda
-
so can i just swap the pin's around on the wires ??
-
if they are diffrent in theory yes but you'll need to check the lot
-
would you have a wiring diagram for both the 037 906 022 BB ecu and the 037 906 022 E ecu ??
so i know which pin's need swapping around :)
cheers phil
