Title: CAT question
Post by: ineson on 01 September 2008, 10:26
Can anybody tell me if a cat from any other car (eg GTI) will fit on a mk3 cabriolet 1.8?

The mrs needs a new one I think, but if I can get one from a breaking gti or similar I will choose that option (damn credit crunch! )

Is that from the dealers or somewhere like euro car parts? Sorry I thought they were mega bucks judging on what I have paid on previous cars.

Will be giving them a ring then and sorting one out. Thanks.

what leads you to beleive the cat has gone?

rattles, corrosion, loss of power?

different choices for different engines as below:-

Looks like its the ADZ engine as its a 96 P reg.

When it was in the garage a few weeks back for the brakes to be done I asked him to give it the once over because it is noisy and a little short on power so I thought exhaust. He said the exhaust was fine but the cat was the problem, he said it was fine but would need replacing sooner rather than later.

I initially thought it meant hundreds as thats what I have paid previously on Vauxhalls  :embarassed: but it appears not.

Would the Cat make a big difference in power if it was shot?

they do block the flow though the exhaust, but usually if that is the ase you can hear the insides rattling - rasping slightly...

oh dont throw the old one away, scrap dealers are paying about 25 quid for scrap ones - so in essence you are getting a new cat for 35 quid...

repeat DO NOT THROW IT AWAY!

It does have a raspy noise to it and I think is losing power so looks like definately the CAT.

I wont throw the old one away trust me the credit crunch has taken its toll so I will be looking to recoup as much money as I can for the old one.

Thanks for all the info and advise mate really appreciate it.

The Gti 8v 7/93 to 2/95 and 16v 8/93 to 6/95 are identical and later models come with the front pipe attached!
oh and the 1.8 cat wont fit a 2.0 due to different front pipe!
