I want to paint the rocker cover and a few other bits in the engine bay to tidy it up a little.
I got some high temp paint.
Now do prime before paint, or just straight paint it? Not sure if the primer can handle heat.
Ohh and how do you paint the rock cover? I dont know how you take it off, if i undid the allen key looking bolts on top, surely they would remove the whole top bit and the engine will be exposed? Then i would need a new head gasket!?!? im confused now!!
Its a 1.4 AEX btw.
cheers
LL ;)

take it off to paint....its not the head gasket, its the rocker cover gasket, im not sure what type yours has, if its the cork type you need to replace with a new one (very cheep at dealers) the 8v has a rubber one which can be re used
-
Just make sure you clean it with degreaser before paint and also key the surface up other wise it will chip real easy.....oh yeah I'm using normal spray on my rocker and shes being fine!!
Even my calipers have normal auto paint and apart from keeping them clean and bright there still fine 2 years on!!
-
So i can just undo the three bolts and take it off, OK then. Guess i need to find out what gasket i got. If i take it off and i reuse the gasket, it could have a bad effect then?!?!
No primer then??
cheers peeps!

here's mine 2 months after being primed and painted in normal car paint..... like i said tho, youll need to really degrease it and rough the surface up (or use plain old hammerite)

how did you get the vw to look so nice?!

how did you get the vw to look so nice?!
I stripped all the paint off with nitromores followed by wet and dry (on my electric sander) and gave it some polish and then painted around it... followed by more polish after the paint was dry. I am pleased with it and like i've said its normal car body paint..

the AEX is a rubber gasket and can be re used providing its in good condition. i paied £7 for my repacement one.
I smoothed my cover as well

I did it a little right up in the cosmetic section mate, just used hammerite but same principle for HT paint! You shouldn't need primer, as mentioned, clean all the sh!t off & 'key' the metal to get a good surface to paint on!
On a '92 Scirocco using black smooth hammerite;

did you know the 8V GTI rocker cover fits the 1.8L engines? I painted mine silver and put it on the 1.8... looks like a GTI lump and really tidys it up
-
i need to do this as mine is currently w@nk
was thinking of painting it my body colour (fjord blue - LR5V)
don't want black or polished
what do you guys recommend that i do... get the paint made up at stealers? or a paint shop? do i need to add anything to it if I wanted to guarantee HT capability? (boneybradley i know you have used ordinary paint but I am still slightly sceptical)
-
yeah I was unsure and it was meant to be a stop gap while I sorted my spare rocker..but 6 months now and it still looks ok. I was going to polish my spare but I'm now unsure? (its a bit common :lipsrsealed: sorry kells)

so what do you reckon about the body colour idea?
i want to get an exact match.... you think that'll look alright? how do you reckon i can go about doing it with HT paint?
-
I'm not sure who can mix ht paint?? but I'm unsure about body coloured!! maybe a bit o.t.t.. I chose red as I have used the colour elsewhere.

this is my bay as it stands at the moment...

i would have thought that the body coloured cover would have contrasted with the black parts in the engine bay and also match the pillar mounts and bonnet underside... but i think to work it has to be exact?
:undecided:

hahahahahaha whatever boney    well all my metal bits are polished, even the copper bits that are on the brake lines....
tbh i wouldnt reccomend polishing unless you have to time to keep upto it, i polish mine up with the autosol every few days, if not stains can appear, water can damage the finish if your not carefull etc, its ok for me as i make the time to do it, and seen as my cars have always had polished bays its just the norm to me but im guessing for some people it could look crappy pretty quickly
same colour rocker as the car would be good, guy u would ideally want to prime it with a heat resistant paint then spray with normal paint and laquer it :) would look fantastic and make your bay look really up to date, i say do it

You know what im fed up with? Every time i opend the bonnet on my 8V or my 1.8 (which looks identical accept for the injection system) the people in my garage or people i know always laugh and say "wow that engines tiny" Which i suppose it is pretty small... the 16v is the only one that looks like a powerfull engine..
Same with my 1.4 but to be fair thats alowd to be small.. So i might do what i did on my 1.4... fit a big cover over it :P it took a bit of custom fitting and that but it stoped people laughing at my little AEX Engine

I might take an angle grinder to the cover first, clean it up a bit and see how that looks. Then i will paint it black if that looks crap. Got some black HT i can use.
i reckon the color coded rocker cover idea is good to. Would tie the engine in with the bay nice, especially if the engine bay was really clean.
LL ;)

Dont use an angle grinder will look
Find a platers/powdercoaters and get it bead cleaned.
Best finish to key paint onto, Better still get them to bead it and powder coat it or even Chrome plate .

cheers Kells... hadn't thought to prime with HT paint and then spray and lacquer

NP guy matey, done a few engines in my time, colour coded does look Cool, metalic black is also a wicked colour for a lump too, prob more so on a black car...
