I've got a 1990 8V. Just noticed yesterday that my N/S outer CV boot is split and has sprayed some grease out. Its not that bad....yet (but the other 3 don't look too clever either :sad:) Searched the forum and know that I need to get a breaker bar and a spline socket set to get the driveshaft off.
Question is, how long can I leave it? I do 50 miles a day in it and it might be a couple of weeks before I will have time to do it. Will it be alright until then or is it a case of 'how long is a piece of string'?

most people go till next MOT. but sh!te will get in a bugger the joint so best fix sonner rather than later

did mine last weekend, in about 20 minutes (did have a ramp though)
If its the outer YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE DRIVESHAFT;
1. with the car still on the floor take the centre cap off the wheel and using a 32mm socket break the driveshaft bolt (i.e undo it a bit)
2. get the car off the ground, wheel off, and take the driveshaft nut off.
3. undo the 3 bolts holding the bottom ball joint on, slide the hub towards you and you should have room to get the driveshaft out of the hub.
4. You can now pull the old cv boot back away from the joint (if its split anyway just fold it back)
5, you then need to drift the cv off the driveshaft, soft faced copper mallet is best but if its stubborn, just give it some welly, it will split eventually.
6, replace boot, remembering to pack with grease,
7. refitting is a reverse of the removal as they say!!! oh and dont forget to put the new plastic washer & convex washer on too.
