Title: Fully specced Edition 30 '08' plate.
Post by: noj66 on 30 August 2008, 17:55
Having ordered a Scirocco which is due mid October,i've been trying to sell my current car,an Alpina D3(warmed over 320d).It looks like i've finally sold it so on Friday went to test drive the above mentioned Edition 30,a black 5 door with DSG,touch screen nav and xenons.
It's in a VW dealer in North Wales for £20,850,which i think is a good price(only covered 9000 miles). My thinking is buy the Golf, even though i'm only gonna have it a short while, for 20k if they will take it and i would think it would still be worth a good chunk of that come October, despite the current economic gloom.Any thoughts folks?

Have you rang the dealer you are getting the scirocco from to see how much they will give you trade in for the ED 30

Yeah,to be honest they just tried to sell me something else!He actually said 'oh we have an R32 in the showroom that's just been reduced to 25k'.I  felt like saying are you havin' a fookin' laugh, but managed to be polite and decline his kind offer!

Only issue is the short period of time you'll have it - 6months or so might be worth it but knowing dealer if they know you need to get rid when you take delivery of the new car they will offer you silly money - try and speak to them to do a serious buy back offer on it when the new one arrives.

Price does sound ok though.

The problem will be moving it on when the scirocco arrive's under present condition's.
I live just down the road, i dont mind looking after either one for you while trying to find a buyer.

I know, more sensible option is to buy a tidy old GTI or E30 BMW for about £1500 and use that.

For once I agree with TopCat about getting rid of the ED30

It depends what you are trying to achieve by buying another car for the time between now and when the rocco arrives.

I got rid of my previous car 2 months before my ED30 arrived, to fill the gap I just went through the selection of cars my local rental companies had, the highlight was a new TT with DSG gearbox  and low was a 1.6 Focus

I think if I were in the same position as you I would have a little fun with some older cars. Who knows you may even bag a bargain that you can sell for MORE than you bought it for. If you bought a MKII GTI, you may even consider keeping it

Personally I would go for a 6 month lease at lingscars or somewhere similar, at least you know you will get rid of the car at the right time. I think you will find you get ripped off by the dealer (dont we all, ......the barstewards).  You could end up having to accept £15k or less for the 08 ed 30 from a dealer....nothing would surprise me more.

Though having browsed some lovely MK2s for £1500 would also suggest this is a real option, and you will be able to get ALL your money back at the end of the time (for the right car of course).

Cheers for the advice guys.I think an old Mk2,Corrado or E30 Beemer is the kind of thing i'm gonna look for.The Mk2 appeals because it was always a car i couldn't afford when they were newish,so i had a couple of 205GTIs instead at the time.It would be nice to finally scratch the itch to own one.

....On my way to (near) Brighton for a Biali Motorsport meet lunch yesterday, I stopped for V-Power on the A31 and on the next pump was an immaculate silver Mk2 G-reg with a guy of about my age. Cloth interior and really was mint (and not for sale!!). I caught him up later around Chichester and followed - Nice exhaust note. Lots of thumbs-ups and I pressed on.

....Horney is exceptionally happy with the Corrado he's just bought. Thread elsewhere on this site.

Yeah i appreciate what your saying, but the car has been reduced from £23500.I had toyed with being able to move it on for the same money come the time(fanciful i know),thus adding another motor to my 'been there, done that' list and not being out of pocket.

....Risky business in this day and age! I don't think you can ever not be out of pocket with cars, but it's not the point of having them imo.

You have absolutly no chance of selling on an edition 30 with 2 keepers Noj!!, you will be lucky to get more then £20000. Get a cheap

runaround

I'm sorry Noj66, but I fail to see your logic here :undecided:

If I said My car was reduced from £50k to £30k and it was something like a Renault Clio 1.2, would you still think it was a good deal because it had been reduced by £20K?

Just because a car is advertised as reduced, it doesn't mean it is worth even the reduced price. Something is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it

In the long run, it'd perhaps be chaeper and less hassle to just hire a car for the wks you need to...

....When I lived in Chelsea (for about 25 years), that's exactly what I did - Hired a car as and when needed, except in the last few years when I had the BMW. No hassle and always a new car and a choice of vehicle.

Surely you can wait what is only going to be a couple of weeks until the Scirrocco arrives?! By the time the documents have been processed, insurance arranged, not really sure I could be @rsed with all the hassle.

I agree that a Corrado would be a good bet, always liked those cars!
