Title: Mk2 Golf GTI laggy when putting yer foot down
Post by: EvilKeg on 29 August 2008, 08:40
Ok, my golf gti 16v just had a new downpipe and SS exaust system fitted at great cost I might add!

It doesn't want to start without dipping the accelerator and
It's a bit lumpy on start, and occasionally dies if left to it's self.

When driving along, when I put my foot down it seems to lag and the exhaust goes du-du-du as if I'm driving herbie

There is also a smell of petrol occasionally...

Any ideas?

Do I need to get it to a mechanics ASAP?

Sounds like the timing is out or someone hast reconnected something after fitting the exhaust.

Yea, get the timing setup and check the fuel/air mix. When were the spark plugs last changed? Check them out too only takes a few seconds!

^ check for air leaks too. heavy acceleration will cause the engine to lift - this can cause air leaks after the air box and metering head. worth a look

If it REALLY only does since you had the exhaust fitted, I would check that they made the exhaust air tight, e.g. did they renew the manifold gaskets, if the manifold tightened up etc.

Or... They might have unknowingly pulled off one of the hidden vac hoses underneath the air inlet pipes.

Also, as the guys have said above, if you change anything like that on a 16v, you technically need the CO2 screw resetting.

It was the spark plugs! They were new in April... I guess I've been unlucky :d
