It seems my front tyres both have 3mm tread left on them, and the two rears each have 6mm tread.
Am I better swapping the wheels around, front to back etc? Which end is best to have the thickest tread until I get new rubber?

swap them round for now mate
you may end up replacing all 4 in one go though so start budgeting for that

I suspected it'd be better to have the thicker tread at the front, seeing as the front wheels do the majority of the work. I'll do it tomorrow night ready for my road trip. Must check my preasure too!!

By a pressure checker and a double barrel foot pump and it can all be done at home.

Just swapped the wheels over. Bugger me I sh!t myself jacking the car up! I was jacking the front, and the rear started to lift up substantially!! Is that normal?

Dunno, I don't have any triangles like the Haybes manual says I should, so there are no readily visible jacking points.

They did a test on top gear and in terms of grip round corners, having better tyres on the back was better (even on a front wheel drive car) as the back end was easily lost if the back tyres were knackered. However, under heavy braking its imperative to have good tyres on the front, so I would ignore Top Gear!

i think its better to have more grip on the back or you`ll start "drifting" more
-
I've read during the winter your tyres are best off on the rear as if you're going to lose control on the ice, it's your back end that will go badly! And you have no control over the back end.. which makes sense :)
-
either way round you have them you will have trouble in the wet, depends what you like better? over or under steer?

yea bugger thas fine mate, in our place when i'm whipping wheels off to paint them, i put the jack roughly in the middle pump away and lift the whole side up and whip them both off saves time and effort
