Post by: Saint Steve on 28 August 2008, 20:46
Ok, im looking to purchase a 2nd Motor, preferablely another GTi for the wife as it were, even to do a restore job etc on it.

What VW GTi or Model of a vw would be the best one to buy if you had £1500 to spend on a cheap runner and which model to look for. Any

ideas you bunch of very Knowledgable peeps

Go for a MKII GTI 16V. £1500 should get you a decent one.

Second

MkII all the way, £1,500 is plenty for a good one. You get all the fun of a Mk1 just a bit more reliable.

That was exactly what I was going to say, a decent Mk2 16 valver 5 door. (Big bumoer) Oak green was nice if I remember correctly.  Clay it, get it polished up with a PC or the G220, (good excuse for you to get one) and a decent full  service.

Good to see you back on here, by the way  :smug:

Ah Mr Top Cat....

I prefer to spend my valuable time cleaning rather than take photos, upload them etc etc. There's beer to be drunk, detailing materials to order, a batcave garage to build, overtime to pay for said garage...

Oi you lot, don't be so hasty to overlook the wonderful MK2 8v

Post by: MarkS on 28 August 2008, 22:04
Only difference between a 8v and 16v is that the 16v arrives at the next corner a bit quicker than the 8v

Get a mk2!
You may find yourself driving it more than the wife

....Apart from the Porsche 911 derivatives, is there a more special series of cars over the last 30 years than the Golf GTI?

I love those Mk2's.

I would love to say get a Lupo GTI as they are amazing cars (Stay away from the Polo GTi) but I dont know what the prices are like for them oversees.

An MK2 16V sounds amazing but in truth there is only one option for your wife......

Get her a Smart Car.  :lipsrsealed:

Hey Phil nice to see you back and looking to splash the cash on a new toy! Definately go for a MK2, I had a 16v until a few months ago and wish I hadnt sold it but needs must. Mine was an Oak Green and many regard these as "rare" in truth they are not just one of the best colours.
Good luck in your search, for that sort of money you should be able to find a tidy one.

Now...what do you make of this for a cheap GTi?

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/680653.htm (http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/680653.htm)

I emailed the dude on the ad, obviously querying the ridiculously low price £8000 and got this in reply.

"Hi, as you've seen in the ad the price is £8.000, the car has full history service, excellent condition, accident free, has no damage, no scratches, MOT'd until Oct '09 Taxed until Jul '09, Warranty till Jul '09. It is an UK car (not an import), under UK number plates and it has full UK. I bought it from NAAFI at a very good price which I too reduced substantially for a quick sale. The car is located in Madrid, Spain and so am I, but I believe this shouldn't be a problem as I can have the car delivered back to the UK. Email me back if you are still interested."

Now, why would someone sell a mint 07 GTI for £8,000? I don't gamble guys well, technically not true... I will buy a Euromillions ticket tonight, but reckon that theres more chance of winning that than this car being genuine....or am i being too sceptical

edit: i just emaild him acting interested, whats the betting i get the same responce that you did....word for word

It must be fate, it's got my initials on the Reg Plate.

lol, you mind thinks the same as mine steveP!  although after showing her pics of that mark 2, she says it doesnt look "classic enough" .

A classic must mean a bucket of rust then!!,. No she says she see's those too often not to class it as a classic.i think she wants some sort of restoration

....If it's for her to drive, why not just let her get on with it and then show you her 'shortlist'. Sounds like you've got loads of hassle otherwise!
