Title: vr6 or 1.8t
Post by: vvrr66 on 08 May 2004, 09:48
bit of a dilemma

have a budget of 6000-7000

shoud i go for a minted fully loaded vr6 highline or a lower spec iv1.8t?

i prefer full leather etc but cannot stretch to include full leather in a 1.8t.

what would you do?

I'd go for the VR6, you will get a nice motor, with plenty of power, and not be frustrated about not being able to afford to do the mods you would want to do to the 1.8T.

i agree, go for the vr6 - i had my first go in one earlier this week and it was awesome!!  not good enough for me to sell the cab but then im always going to be biased towards the mark 1  ;) :D

id go for the vr6 as well,

get the best car for your money rather than scrimping on stuff and getting a crap 1.8t, there not that special any way.

speak to golfvr6, im sure he will give you some knowledge on the vr6. :D

VR6 is hard to beat at 5000 quid.
You will be able to get a mint highline for under ?7000.
They can be tuned to well over 200 bhp.
A supercharger kit is 2000 quid, simply bolts on, will give you 250 bhp  ;)

the 1.8t engine is cool :o

i meen the cars as a package,

good vr6 is better than a nail of a 1.8t :P

is it as simple as that?
are you goin to get a supercharger for yours vr6?

It is a simple as that.
Compression on the V6 is quite low, so it will run fairly low boost induction, no bottom end rebuild required.
If only i had the cash  :'(

you need to get a later v5 (170bhp) which has the sports pack option because standard the suspension is crap :P
dont get 150bhp one either. its slow

that might be a bit more than 7000 ???

get a vr6  ;D ;D

ive got a 1.8T, however if you really want a top dog perfect mega rapid minter go for the vr6, but if you want it to go for a bit of fancy climate, onboard comp, etc you would be able to get a decent 1.8T with the money, but it really does depend on how you use your car!!
I mean i like a mod or to, but i use my car for commuting an round the m25 to watford to see the gilf! But if i really wanted to have the speedster vr6 an look into every mod possible an show off at shows etc that's what i would of got! 8)

buy a decent mk1 for ?2000 and spend the other ?4000 on a 20vT conversion ;D

both stonkin motors, both quick im not mk4 biased just because i have a mk4!!!!, id test drive both to see and feel what you get for your money, go out there and have a look, if you have the money you have the choice!!

buy a decent mk1 for ?2000 and spend the other ?4000 on a 20vT conversion

what about brakes and suspension to stop and handle the thing!!! coil overs and a big brake conversion would be needed also for a pukka car!!

Gaz 8)

Many people underestimate the power of the v6, don't take any notice of the claimed 174bhp. Most will produce 190bhp+ AS STANDARD.
The 1.8T is a good engine but i would always go for the v6. It is a much more powerful unit.
If you want to spend big bucks, then turbo the v6, the 1.8T will never get near it  ;)

I love 6 cylinder cars, and have owned a few, I have a V6 SAAb at the moment, and would love to drop a V6 in the cab, but for the effect it would have on the handling. I would get a V6 over a 1.8T

V6 in a mk2 isn't supposed to be a problem, not sure about mk1  :-\
Maybe try the 24v, all aluminium engine from the mk4  ;)

I know where there's a brand new V6 lump for sale.

"Just the block with all internals.... tappets, pistons, head, sump blah blah

?4250 is new price!

?850, YES! ?850!!!!!!

Obviously this engine is BRAND NEW!!!!! "

Will give the email address of who's selling it if anyone's interested.

its got to be forced induction all the way, VR6 is a nice lump, but to tune it cheaply (which can be done on the 1.8t) is impossible.  Plus when it comes to resale your 1.8t will stand you in more, plus look that little bit newer.  remember now the Mk5 is here the older shapes will start to show there age just that bit more and the prices will drop out of the vr6's with in a year or so.  Look at the Punto gt's for example, 2 yrs a go could'nt buy one for less than ?5500. Now they start at ?1500 cos the new ones out and are cheap.

If you find out how to make the 1.8t go pissshhh let me know as everyone says you can't run an atmospheric dump valve.???

Well why not combine both ??

Designer Dubs now offer a bolt on kit for the VR6 to add a turbo !!! 350 bhp out the box with no bottom end work ... now that's interesting   ;D :o

hmmm
how much for that then Dave?  :o

a cool 3.5 grand ... but for 350bhp out the box I'm not too sure what else you could do for the money. It'll go much further too, just not with a stock bottom end - what a platform eh !

To get a 1.8T up to that sorta level has got to cost about the same if not more as it's a smaller engine and will need to run sooooo much more boost to get the power.

What do you reckon ?
Title: Re:vr6 or 1.8t
Post by: marcus123 on 12 May 2004, 09:33
i reckon that sounds hot! :D

im warming to mk3/mk2 vr6's every day! :D :D
if i had 6k id buy a mint g60.

but if i didnt want to do that route i would buy a nice mreg vr6 highline and strap on a nice supercharger to give it 250 bhp, cost an extra 2k!

ohhhhhh vr6's are the choice for that money. :D :D

how about a vr6 mk2 for 2.5k ?  ;)
Title: Re:vr6 or 1.8t
Post by: VeeDubGTI16v on 12 May 2004, 12:01
there too heavy for the mk2 arent they?? you need to spend silly money on custom weight springs for the front i thought ???
Title: Re:vr6 or 1.8t
Post by: golfvr6 on 12 May 2004, 12:03
The vr in a mk2 is a common conversion so i doubt it is a problem.
Title: Re:vr6 or 1.8t
Post by: VeeDubGTI16v on 12 May 2004, 12:07
its common but it still mucks up the handling at the front a bit. i suppose it depends what you want. id rather have a lighter engine. if you want a vr6 just buy a corrado. probably similar price fafter you have done all the work and it will handle better than a mk2 anyway. ;D

After to talking to people that have vr in mk2s that is apparently bollox.
Can't really be sure as i've never driven one.
