Title: catch the pigeon
Post by: Guy on 26 August 2008, 22:37
ok - been asked by a neighbour if I can help them with the following

parked under a tree and pigeon poo was left on the bonnet of their new corsa, not for very long I hasten to add

it's knackered the clearcoat as you can see...

right... time for me to ask for help

1 - is there anything that can be done to avoid a respray?
2 - will a respray (i know a good paint shop) be obvious when handing back a car on one of these lease purchase schemes and would it invalidate the guaranteed purchase price?
3 - if a respray is the only route would you opt for that or a touch up specialist? (there are five poo blobs)

if nothing else... let this be a warning to the rest of you that pigeons are dangerous   well their poo is to your paintwork anyway!

I've got one poo mark on my car from previous owner  Not as bad as those though!

Needs paint. Would need to be very good too to prevent it being spotted.

1 - Can't confrim that - but depending on the quote, I'd be tempted not to bother if the car is due back soon (but then I can't see the pics while at work)

2 - When handing back a lease purchase, there are usually very minimal checks.  They'd have to catch someone on a very bad day.  Or, hand the car back dirty when it'll prob show up less (they have a responsibility to perform maintenence work, doesn't mean it has to be 'as new').

3 - I'd only use one if you have had one recommended.

All IMO of course

guy that makes the 2 5p sized bits of (bird crap caused?) laquer peel on my roof look tidy!!
But I would say its paint time.....as hand the car back like that and they'll charge silly silly prices!!

well guys... i think you're all right... no point in trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear... it's paint time

interestingly the poo wasn't on there very long so it must just have been very acidic

would suggest lasting it through till hand back but they still have another 7 months or so of ownership as the car is only a few months old... goes to show it can happen even on modern paintwork

thanks for the input so far

If that happened to either of my cars, after allegedly pigeon poop not on the paint for long, I'd be straight back up to the dealership to complain!

If that happened as you say, then its not fit for purpose. How on earth can you drive around not expecting bird poo to land on a car? That sounds like a paint defect to me, would it be covered by the manufacturers warranty?

I make sure my paints always protected by a decent LSP/Wax. Using Zaino at the moment and bird poop wiped off last weekend with no marking at all. (Poop had been on about 5 mins tops and was still damp).

Can see pic now..  If it were 'my' car rather than a lease, defo re-spray, not mess about attempting to patch it up.  A lease with 7 months..  If the spray work is less than £100 I'd do it, otherwise leave it and hand it back.  If the lease company tried to reduce the value, argue the to55 that it's only bird poo, the paint is clearly less than adequate.

Also point out to your friend where they can buy QD and a microfibre for repeats of the same!

However - I've lost 2 bottles of Megs QD in the boot due to them being so brittle   Time to put the contents in a proper bottle..

get yourself a tuff crate thing from B&Q/Halfrauds... bit of velcro on the bottom stops it sliding around in the boot and keeps all your QD and bits all neat and tidy... and if they leak they won't go over your boot carpet

LOL - I've been meaning to do a boot install in my Megane since I owned it (2 years in Nov), to hold things like this.  Now the car is for sale

The Megane never had a carpet in the boot though, I carried a full size spare and a lot of Sat Nav gear so the original floor was gone.  Only a temporary measure..  So in that case, the velcro would have been useless..  Will defo investigate for the golf though.

Or put it in the glove compartment?
You know I never actually thought of that    Oh well..

i'd say 'no' to keeping fluids in the glove compartment

I knew there was a subconcious reason I didn't do it

Looks like I've taken us a little off topic..  Where's that damn pigeon  :lipsrsealed:

i'd say 'no' to keeping fluids in the glove compartment

  • in the 'summer' the bottles might get hot and go pop under pressure
  • the seal on the bottles might not be any good, especially on megs bottles, and it would all just leak out[/b]

No Offence intended here Guy, but thats POPPYCOCK!

I've had a half full Megs QD Spray in my glovebox with 2 MF cloths for about the last 2 years. Including leaving the car in the Southern French summer heat! If you press the sides of the spray bottle, you can tell instantly if it will leak or not. Its not fizzy and doesn't give any fumes off. Even in the scorching heat the spray didnt expand, (I used it to clean the windsreen as I ran out of washer spray)

Even if it did leak with the bottle lying down half empty, it would be a gas not a liquid, sit the MF clothes under the lid. I'd rather have QD in my glovebox than poop on my paint !!!

No Offence intended here NewGolf... but no it isn't.

I said fluids... not just QD. I had a bottle of something or rather in a glove compartment once... it was a particularly hot day and when I came back to the car I had one wet mess and a ruined log book where the bottle had expanded under pressure.

bottles of QD are not always half empty are they... and what if the seal leaked and the bottle had moved during transit and the air was at the other end? before you say that the seal leaking is 'POPPYCOCK' i have had this happen on a bottle of QD, not in a glove compartment but in my boot and it went everywhere.

but you go right ahead and store your QD in there... I will keep mine upright, in a tuffbox, in the boot thanks.

That happened to me on my Focus. Worse thing is if a bird sh!ts on it and its a boiling hot day bakes into the paint. Had to have mine resprayed. All pigeons should be shot
