Ok folks, was advised to come here by a mate as i am looking at getting a golf, but i have found a project that needs restoring, and if i get it, i will be having it by next week, will post pics up of it, and do a full on project diary of course
if i dont get it i will be moving into the mk3 forum, but im going for the old skool, so if things go well i will be joining you guys
some things i need to know, is what to look for when buying
this car is a gti, but a 1,6 8v with 4 speed box, is that normal?
thanks guys
-
Yeah the early ones were 1.6 with a 4 speed box! Good luck with it mate, the Mk1 has bucket loads more character than a Mk3
-
good good, its the same age as me the 1 i found, 27 years old, lol
-
undoubtedly the best golf ever!!! a world apart from the skip on rollers! you just need too check for rust in the usual places like filer cap arch, sills, bottom of doors round the window seals, you'll probably get atleast some rustso just use it as a bargaining tool. I'd have a good look underneath though because alot of the time the nice ones you see are wither falling apart on the inside with rust or they've been totally rebuilt/welded up again and treated. I was looking at the same model but I would of needed it to be a daily aswell ! still want one though
good luck mate you'll love it when its finished !!!!!
-
cheerz pal, im sure you guys will be able to help me as much as poss with info on things anyways
i do appreciate everything also guys ok
-
welcome (soon) to the dark side..
look in the maintenance section of this "mk1 section" loads of helpful tips
Good luck...we will expect pics of any purchase
Dinx
-
dont worry, i will
-
my advice would be to buy one already restored. someone elses hard work going cheap will save you a fortune in the long run. be prepared for the worst and then only good can happen
good luck. theres nothing like a mark 1
-
hope you dont chav it up.
-
i dont do chav mate
-
as has been said try and get one that's been restored it will save a lot of grief
and try looking for a 16v conversion they are sooo much fun
dont even think about a mk3 a good mk1 16v will leave you with a contented warm glow and a cheshire cat smile every time you drive it

i have a skyline to do that in, lol
-
no mate not like the one you get when your in a retro ride like a well sorted mk1 :smug:
everyone knows skylines are quick, they are one of the few cars that give bikers a hard time
but there is nothing like leaving a modern car behind or giving them a hard time in a 20yo motor
and you never get 'you look like a knob' looks or comments
only admiring glances and jellous looks and f*CK ME that goes comments
above all you can be safe in the knowledge the car your driving spawned a whole genre of motors :nerd:
-
lol
-
so mk1 then?
give yourself over to the dark side
mk1 mk1 mk1 mk1 mk1 mk1 mk1
-
well i have 2 choices
mk1 gti that needs a restoration, or a mk1 1.1 thats been restored for £500
gti is prob the better car isnt it?
-
engine...maybe...but then it depends on mileage, how its been treated etc..
whats stopping you from putting a dif engine in the 1.1 if the bodywork is solid?
Dinx
-
it aint a proper gti i.e registration, chassis etc
-
stop being a gti snob... loads of people change them nowadays..
unless you do want a "gti"
Dinx
-
i'm not being a snob just stating a fact that a posting i read a fella had a problem re-registering a 1.1 or 1.3 as a gti even though he had fitted all gti parts
dont mean to come across as mark snobby just love the the mk1
i did own a 89 16v mk2 and have driven mk3s n 4s but none of them feel 'right'
put it this way when i pull up beside an aston or porka or anything i feel just as cool as as they think they feel if not cooler cos is an old fart
come on dinx you must have had that same feeling?
-
a 1.1 wont have the same trim etc as a gti, also the log book wont say gti, so when selling it wont be that good either
also its nice to restore it myself, as i know i did it myself, and can do it the way i want from scratch
-
yeah its nice to restore it yourself i must admit but from experiecnce (just coming to the end of my respray, absolute barsteward of a job) i'd say look for a mk1 with the best body work you can get for your money. bodywork is the hardest/most expensive/most time consuming job ever imo, and aslong as thats tight you can then set to work on your abf'd slammed beast etc....
if i was you i'd look for mint bodywork with maybe no m.o.t. from purley from mechanical failures. I think mechanicals are he most fun anyway and its rewarding
-
course I have that feeling...hence i miss it when i don't drive it
I remember someone on this forum saying that he wouldn't feel right if he pulled up in a mk1 to say a business meeting...but i think they are cool cars anytime..maybes im just biased though?
anyhoo...back to topic...he just said he was getting a golf, and mentioned the 1.1 so I didn't know he was just after a gti..hence the suggestion of a conversion
totally agree with u bigman...its alot harder if you haven't got the time/money/skills etc.. like me
Dinx

yh i under-estimated the amount of time it took myself, but by this time i was at the point of no return so i had to knuckle down and go for it. just waiting for this 'lovley summer weather' to brighten up so i can base coat and laquer!
I'd do mechanicals anyday, engine conversions are obviously a 'big job' that you can get stuck in with to whatever extent you want, from a 1.6 gti conversion to a 20vt the amount of work can be dictated by choice to an extent, with bodywork though its more of an all or nothing job becuase if you cut corners on the smalest things they come back around and stab you in the back when its 'finished' trust me !
-
i'd buy the 1.1 and go for the sleeper look. for me the love i have for the mark 1 isnt because its a gti its because its a mark 1. the fact that it goes quite quick is an added bonus. 1.8 turbo'd mark 1 please
-
was thinking g60 or the 20vt engine
-
Personally I'd go either 16v or 20vt. 16v because I think it really suits the mk1 and it's driveability, or a 20vt because it's a modern engine in an iconic car.
If I was ever going the supercharge route in a mk1 I think I'd go for a G40 rather than a G60 as I think that suits the mk1 more.
