Title: Front Discs / Pads
Post by: GOLF_MK on 26 August 2008, 16:12
I have to replace my Front Discs and pads asap as the discs are shot.

I have measured the discs and they are the larger (288mm ones)

I don't want to spend a fortune as i have lots of other things to do to the car but don't want to get rubbish that will warp the first time i brake hard either

I've heard that Brembo Max from GSF are good but what pads to go with them?  Any other i should look at?

Thanks

eurocarparts do ate power discs which are good quality and lightly uprated... matched with ate pads you should have a decent set up thats not o.t.t.

After getting a price I won't be  getting them from a dealer, sometimes genuine parts prices are a surprise but i'm sure i can get cheaper / just as good elsewhere;

Discs £40.60 + vat each
Pads £52.27 + vat

£156.83 in total....

I have the same... I can stop very quick without needing to push the pedal that hard, or use abs... Which makes the passengers suprised when you brake just that bit harder!

You will find that The VW discs are made by the same people who make the after market ones ie ATE etc pads as well.
They will last longer (By Miles!)
New discs and pads do nothing unless you bleed the system inc ABS
With good quality fluid once every 2 years.
I have used ATE discs + Padgid pads before on my MK2s with good results but the pads are softer and more abrasive wearing both items faster, but this is the trade off better braking equals more £££.
My MK3 had new discs and pads at 100k fitted at Drift Bridge VW NoV 2005 and i only changed the front pads last Weekend!.
The pads i fitted were ATE stamped Dealer ones i had left from the MK2! Result.
The only real way to improve braking is to increase the surface area
and clamp pressure which i have done  on other cars for best results

Guess what i'll be doing this weekend

Fitted the discs and pads today, the old discs had bigger lips than Lesley Ash

The whole job was easy but needed my Impact Screwdriver to get the disc retaining screws out and a lot of pressure on the caliper bolts too!

Much quieter when braking now.
