Just fitted an ABS sensor (yep, another one!) and whilst I had the wheel off I checked my discs which have a nice lip around them.....being the 288mm means
Anyway.... I can move the shocks (both of them) up by hand by about half an inch, this is by lifting the disc, the top mount as in pic goes up and down, is this normal??
Pics of each top mount whilst car is level.......

Ummm, that gap apears when you lower the car so yea thats normal. Dont think the shock should be loose though?
-
She does'nt have lowering springs just standard springs and shocks...... unless they have been cut at some point?
From the pics of the top mounts does it look like she has been lowered?

He means, when you lower it, as put it on the ground, not jacked up. Not as in SLAM it

top mount looks fine... but im not 100% what you mean about the shockers?? but im guessing you mean the top mount moves with the strut? and this is normal as at normal height they sit like in the photos and will have about and inch of up/down movement for when a wheel drops into a pot hole etc

mine aint that high tbh, i just looked when i checked oil n stuff. They are raised but not that high, and mine were all replaced this week.

mike as you said "yours were new this week" older ones will be more flexible and strechy

I seee :embarassed:

That gap looks too big to me, i would say they are quite knackered.
-
Same gap as mine. I know mine are shot!
-
They are fine.
I replaced my top mount a while ago and they were still the same distance before the swap.
A poor design on VW's side.
-
I dont think its a poor design i think it allows for movement within the mount
-
A rubber mount is supposed to allow for some movement, but when they have stretched that much they probably should be replaced.
