Hey Guys! first of all I'm new to this forum, I came from Australia Sydney and I just recently purchased a second hand 05 GOlf GTI DSG from VW authorized Dealer with has 60 000km. It has perfect service record, it has been service every half a year to VW dealer untill the 60 000km, and it still has 3 month dealer warranty, and another 2 year extended warranty.
Today somehow I notice the engine produce some small ticking noise near the top of the plastic, when i open the hood *note: can only be heard when engine hood is open, and turn on inside my garage. The tick noise sort of come and go. After I rev it to 3000 rpm the noise gone, and after like 1-2 min it start again.
So what could it be the problem~! Please help guys I really love this GTI >______<
-
The ticking noise is perfectly normal when the engine is idling. All GTi engines make this ticking noise. Nothing to worry about.
P.S. Is it just me or have there been a lot of threads recently saying "my car's making a strange noise!, what's wrong with it??"...
-
Sounds like the emission control solenoid thingy, is on the left hand side of the engine bay when your looking at it?
-
Yeah somewhere in the left, but all i know is if you move it next to the side of the car, the ticking noise sound more obvious, but in front of the engine, it sound perfectly normal, even when you revved it to 3500, it sound so smooth.
Im worried that it might be the valve or something -___-. Sorry I'm new to this, I've bought this car 3 days ago.
thanks for all your help
Regards
p.s I really love my Golf GTI!
-
they all tick on idle, some say its a diesely type noise.....doesn't drive like a diesel though :D
Get up close and personal with a newer one, in a quiet space and compare both. Seriously, if its the same as mine 29000miles and a 2005 registered 2006 model then you have no worries at all mate.
-
Mine does it too. I wouldn't worry man. Sit back, relax and enjoy the car
-
Thanks guys! but i still think i'll bring it to VW dealer to have it check again -__-
Really sensitive with rattle noise :P.
p.s my first european car =)
-
Deff sounds like the evap canister, when you blip the throttle It will kick in for a few minuts as well as just coming on randomly. Best to get these things looked at though if you're not sure. I am still paranoid about a few noises with mine after a month so know how you feel!
-
Most GTi's sound like that.
My all time favourite was when a friend climbed in before my final school dance and bluntly stated. "Its quite fast for a diesel"
Almost smacked her but being a lady it would have been inapproriate and we decided rather to thrash the car and show her just how fast our "diesel" actually is
-
Given the OP says the noise comes and goes my money is on the evap canister rather than the diesel(ish) burble at idle.
-
Waht is evap canister? Is that mean is really bad? Should i still drive it ?

What he means is, that is the component that is making a noise (black box in front of the drivers side headlight). It has a noisy solenoid that makes a tapping noise when it is operating. The other noise that sounds like a clattery diesel is the High pressure fuel system that the TFSI engine runs.
Your car is completely fine.

Indeed, didn't mean to cause any more alarm! Perfectly normal! By all means get it checked out for your own peace of mind but I'm certain its the evap canister you are hearing and that is normal. Its also normal for people who havent had a VAG before to wonder / be concerned at what it is

Hey GUysss!!!! Help Here! look at this "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc40BEYgPQM&feature=related" listen to it in about 28 second and in between 49-51 second. Thats The sound I experience the Tickinggg :( :( :( But is not as loud as that. about half the noise. Buts its annoying
    Hope its okay.
P.S Everything is stock, no modified

if your worried just take it to a dealer.

Just had muy 05 (55) back from the stealers....amongst other items they checked a high pitched whine after engine off.. only recently developed. I am now waiting on a solenoid/ evap thingy too....just to add to the current wave of paranoia...all done under warranty...
-
I have a very similar sound, which I can only describe as a top end metalic rattle - only when the engine was cold, and it was worrying me slightly. I took it for a service and mentioned it to look into and they said nothing was wrong, just the normal noise that these engines make when cold.
I'll not 100% convinced as it didn't make the noise when new, but it's on file that I've mentioned it so if anything was to develop later then I can refer them back to the first service -I'm not going to worry about it now and enjoy the car.
-
I noticed an occasional flat spot when I was acceleration...either in S or D mode, foot down and occasionally less response than otherwise i would expect. I thought it was down to something with the DSG, however it seems that this evap solenoid is not firing properly or.....so they say.....anyhoo I will just accept it and be thankful that at least something is being replaced under warranty...whilst it exists. Booked in for next Wednesday, have little faith in my dealer though everything else I highlighted was returned as No Fault Found.
Occasional steering rack noise - NFF
Centre console/ arm rest rattle - NFF
Auto lights sensitive/ occasionally not switching off - NFF despite it being identified as a problem in March ffs by the same stealershop!
sorry didn't mean to thread hijack. I will post when the evap gets replaced and advise if it clears the symptoms.

He obviously doesn't trust them...   and with good reason. I don't trust them either

Bump!
Somebody help
Im also curious

I'll report on Wednesday evening if the replacement of my evap solenoid has resolved the symptoms I had...not ticking or noise related though, occasional flatspot or lack of power.

do you get this drop of power with the esp turned off still???
-
nope esp was on, didnt try it on or off...are you thinking it was the esp kicking in?
driving conditions were dry and it was noticeable just after a corner, almost like the revs took a big dip. It didnt matter if I was in D or S. Also on occasion when accelerating, felt a hesitancy in the boost.
Anyway, its going in tomorrow to get whatever solenoid it is replaced. Hopefully they will accept my white worm claim on the tailgate handle. My dealer seems really stingy and reluctant to do anything warranty related, they must have got a right roasting in the past, or had their fingers severely burnt for work that was not covered under warranty.
-
try it with it off, sounds the same as mine.mines in any gear setting, enough to almost headbutt steering wheel when it does it.
esp off, and its fine.
-
will give it a go later....have you had your issue diagnosed Phil?

That is a valve for the crankcase ventilation, which goes into the intake manifold. I can't say I've noticed it being noisy, but then I've never run the motor with the cover off!
A scan at the stealer should show up any fault codes though.

Hmmmm - do you have four matching boots on yours?
I have to say, I really don't think that the Teves ESP system fitted to the Golf is as "refined" as either the Bosch 8.0 on my RS, nor the older Bosch 5.7 on my 2003 S4. Dunno why VW penny pinch with cheaper spec'd products on their cars, when Audi can use better quality stuff!
-
Ok ... EVAP solenoid thingy replaced. I have to say I do notice that the revs are much smoother and the apparent "flat spot" is no longer there, fingers crossed.
-
hope its sorted pal
