Hi, New boy here, has anyone had a Quaife ATB diff fitted to a Edition 30 with DSG, had one on order for months now, 310bhp - getting through Toyo T1R's at an alarming rate! Also been quoted £1500 fitted, sounds a bit steep.
-
....Warm Welcome here, Neil
No, about £1,500 supply and fit inc vat is not at all steep - I got 3 quotes, all were within £20 of £1,550. VW Racing were going to do mine next week but their in-house gearbox mechanic has just broken his leg in a bike incident (he's ok otherwise) so we are looking at a week or so later as soon as they can get a temporary mechanic up to their standard and "not any old gearbox boy" to quote their words .
Same DSG box of tricks for GTI and Ed30 AFAIK.
VWR can offer their own exclusive version Quaife but they aren't a public 'on-the-street' shop. I can introduce you but only if you are serious and flexible please as their priority is racing. PM me if seriously interested. Otherwise I suggest APS - Mention my name to Ed 01280 840491 www.autops.co.uk (everyone who knows me, knows me as RedRobin with the red Mk5 GTI).
Hope this helps
P.S. - I just read your sig - Yes, I'd say you were a serious modder!
-
APS? The same people that put my AP discs on the wrong way round lol??
Where are VW racing based red-robin? and what else do they offer as im trying to set mine up perfectly for the track.
-
Thanks Redrobin, I've been using AMD in Essex who also have a gearbox boff, as you say their price seems about right, I dont think I'll get it done before a track day at Silverstone anyway so I'll wait for it to be delivered (and melt front tyres).
You may have seen the White ED 30 on the cover of Performance Tuner last month, also made a few pages in Volkswagen Driver in July.
Cheers.

That's some serious mods there  Sounding like a beast - can't wait to start moding mine  How much did it cost to buy without fitting?

Looking forward to hearing your views on the diff once done RedRobin  I may have asked this question before but have a memory like a siv (sorry!) Do you have to "qualify" to have mods done by vw racing?

....Having already driven a GTI with the VWR-Quaife diff I know roughly what to expect but of course will be posting my 'views' as soon as.
(Sent you a PM)

The unit on its own is about £850 inc VAT, but you will loose your car for about 3 days, its gota be worth it if you do any track days. The ED30 is well worth spending a few bob on, the look on some Porsche owners faces is worth it alone.

....VWR-Quaife version is about £1,000 but I'm told is 'faster' in responding. Total costs include DSG oil+filter change.
I used to think that such a diff was a waste of time unless you did track, but it's an underestimated mod (until you've experienced one!) and greatly contributes to the FWD of the GTI/Ed30 especially if more neddies are at the front wheels. It's helpful in greasier or wet conditions. You still have to drive safely but it'll make a difference - A bit like AP brakes do.

Hi Neil and welcome to the forum.
I'm making a jump here, but I think you are the chap I spoke to at GTI international regarding launch control aren't you?
My car was the ED30 on the JBS stand.
Good to see you finally made it onto the forum
I'm also going for the Quaife diff through VW racing, so it'll be good to compare
-
Hurdy with your clutch "problem" do you think getting a Quaife diff is really a good idea as it may put more stress on your clutch packs in certain situations.

....I'm sure that Hurdy will take VW Racing's advice - Probably the best advice you could get in the UK given their direct VW connections. They'll look at the whole package of Hurdy's mods.

Hi Hurdy, I do remember speaking to you at Bruntingthorpe about the launch control as I use hand controls (motorbike + tree = wheelchair !) I couldnt brake and rev at the same time. Managed a 14.1 1/4 and 5.5 to 60mph by holding brake down with pole, had to grab the steering wheel a bit sharpish though.
How's things, was you clutch slipping? I've had the intercooler and KW suspension fitted since then, feels quicker. Could have used the Quaife diff before a track day at Silverstone in a couple of weeks, meeting two other mkv Gti blokes there, both prepared by VW racing for the VW cup. The 3 of us are in wheelchairs!! It may well end in tears (probably for me).

also made a few pages in Volkswagen Driver in July.
Very nice car indeed  oh and Welcome. Thats the only copy I have of Volkswagon Driver (salesman gave it to me when I bought my ED30)

I do look a lot more like George Clooney in real life.

Yup, greta to see you here
That was a really good time considering the stick trick you had to use
Clutch is okay at the moment. I had the power dialled down and so no slippage at the moment
Hopefully a more permanent solution is in the pipeline soon.
Sounds like a good meet you'll be having, remember to take someone with you for the piccies

The Quaife will be fitted along with uprated clutchplates and so this should alleviate any issues with slip. The Quaife should help with the slip in future as there will be less instances of on/off power through the drivetrain with the traction control cutting in/out.
-
....Just an update to say that my scheduled Quaife install at VW Racing has had to be rescheduled. I'm totally cool about that and have no problem waiting. As racing is their priority, I always knew it was a possibility.
Will be as soon as they can plan it in again and, of course, I'll post about it.
