Just replaced my Dunlop Sportmax with a pair of vredestein sessantas on the front. Noticed the change straight away. The feel through the steering wheel is so much better. Makes me realise what I've been missing for the past 9 months. Took her out the back roads for a blast and the grip is awesome. Much smooter riding as well.
Mentioned my concerns to the tyrefitter about some of the points TT raised. He was, how shall we say, dismissive. He had Goodyear F1s in stock as well which he says are a great tyre but not worth the extra in his opinion. To prove a point, he showed me his Toyota Celica. He has Sessantas on and says he loves them. After 8000 miles they are running as well as when they were new.

Thats the thing with tyres everyone i speak to recommends something different.
Most on here say F1s tho.
-
I know, each to their own. I know the F1s are a great tyre and wouldn't have been disappointed.
-
....As long as what you've got isn't obviously rubbish it's natural to tend to recommend the devil you know rather than the one you don't.
The F1 GDS3 Directionals are no longer produced but were a very well liked tyre by enthusiasts and they also looked cool, though that shouldn't be the reason for buying a tyre which is your only point of contact with the road!!
I like what I heard about the Sessantas but had some questions and their techsupport was totally useless so I gave up and got F1 Assymetrics.
-
Still loving the F1's here too
-
and here :) all four corners...:D not cheap though, but a great performance and safety mod if you ask me. ( which you didnt).
-
I'm about to buy a set of four tyres but am torn between these two! Before i read this post i was going for the f1 assymetrics, but now i'm not sure. Can anyone tell me the difference between the tyres in terms of performance in wet/dry? :undecided:

....I don't remember their conclusions (short term memory like a siv, like you!) but EVO did a test feature and I think that Goodyear's were the best overall - Would someone confirm or correct me please?
I do know that Vredestein's customer support sucks! And Goodyear's is excellent.

Correct. Overall the Goodyears came first. However for track driving, the Vred's were the winner, the Goodyears were 2nd. But the conclusion was that for normal road driving (and the occasional track) the Goodyears were the best all rounder.

....Thanks buddy!
Ideally it's best to have a spare set of wheels and run on track rubber - More expensive initial outlay but cheaper on road tyre replacement!

We've had quite a lot of issues with uneven wear and noise that would have you believe you'd got a failed wheel bearing with the Dunlop Sport Max fitted to Octavia vRS.
After seeing the Vreds at GTi Inters I was most impressed.

Its funny you should say that... the inside of my sportmaxx were so worn it was a complete joke... almost no tread at all, where as the outside was like new. Admittedly I didnt have correct tyre pressures for quite some time... but didnt expect to see them in that state.

Yeah the Goodyears came out best overall .... the Ultrac Sessantas did however do extremely well (2nd overall) and easily won the 25 minute Road Route test, which was designed to test the tyres over normal road conditions for steering feel, ride quality and noise. No other tyre came close to them on this test (which was undertaken blind - so the drivers did'nt know what brand of tyres they were driving on).

JonnyG - great great link to the pdf there. I hadn't seen the article in some time, so was relaying everything from memory, so apologies that my previous post was slightly incorrect regarding the vredsteins being quicker around the track! :embarassed:

I would only listen to advice on a tyre from someone who has the same tyre on the same vehicle as myself. For example, i had a set of Falken's (i know i know, i was young etc )on my prevoius car (Focus) and thought they were OK ISH. My colleague had the same tyre on 2 cars he had at the same time and loved them on his Escort but hated them on his Subaru. I think that the different construction methods used make some tyres more sensitive to the weight of a vehicle. So the point of this is the report that EVO did is an excellent represention of what we can expect from each tyre so F1's or Sessantsa would be the only choice, which one will probable be determined by Price or, god forbit, looks. Either way i think that both offer excellent performance for the GTI
-
....^Good point about the match between tyre and car. If you think about the dynamics of different vehicles involved, it's totally logical.

I was interested in the Vreds but plumped for the F1 GSD3s instead
Surprised to hear they've stopped making them
Is there a reason?
They been replaced by the assymetrics?
Looks like I bought mine just in time then!
Very impressed with them
But I'm sure the Vreds are excellent too!

....I don't know an official reason but reckon it's because the Assyms do everything that the Directionals, but do it better according to Goodyear.

mytyres.co.uk have eagle F1 Gs-D3`s for £99 fitted, Asymettrics are £109.5 fitted, the chances are the GS have been sitting about a while but still a good price.

Cant wait to get rid of my dunlop maxx , only about 1000 miles left, will go for the F1`s i think,

Yup. I must get the GSD3's offered to me every week on 'Special' As this tyre was about for a few years there is going to be loads dotted about, give it 6 months and the price will be rock bottom!!

I currently have Michelin Pilot Sports on (not my choice were on when i bought it), and it doesnt suprise me they did poorly in the wet braking test - i have very little confidence in them under heavy braking, particularly in the wet. im quite suprised to see they came top in the dry braking, as i dont think thats great either but oh well. Will be a while before they will need to be changed, but im leaning towards the vredestein's at the moment i think - just to save myself a few quid! (im a cheapskate) :smug:

Bit off topic... but was parked next to a new S5 yesterday. Did you know they come with 19" SportMaxx??? I would be giving them straight back!!
-
AutoExpress (Evo's sister mag.) have a test this week - Pzero came out on top in most tests (aqauplaning, braking etc.)

....But different tyres suit different cars. It's all to do with dynamics.

I read the Auto Express tyre article , quite interesting.
Was in the dealers last week and their new Scirocco was fitted with Pirelli Zeros
