Title: Noooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! w/pics
Post by: stealthwolf on 22 August 2008, 12:26
I scratched my GTI last night

Decided to visit parents. They live in a dodgy part of the midlands and there was no way I was gonna leave my GTI parked out on the street.

Parked it into the garage but it was too narrow for me to open the door and squeeze out, though I did try. I didn't notice until afterwards but the painted bumper strip has a touch of paint missing right from the edge. This wasn't the problem since you could barely see it with the door closed.

I decided to retry and park it a second time to give me more room ...SCRAPE!...managed to catch the door on one of the pillars by the garage wall. There are now three scrates running down the door, horizontally, maybe a millimetre wide, upto 20cm long and down to the primer. Did the fingernail test and I could *just* about feel it. Rubbed my finger over it and most it was gone but there was still some marks there.

Had the car about ten days. Drove ever so carefully everywhere I went and now this happens!

I feel gutted. I want to hang my self. I scratched my GTI.

Will post pics later when I feel less suicidal.

PICS:
Difficult getting a decent pic when it's still in the garage, but the damage is worse than I thought:

The only thing that mildly cheers me up is that yesterday I accidentally discovered that the stereo will hold 6 CDs. I thought it was just a single-slot single-CD player. Obviously not. Just would have been nicer to have been mp3 compatible.

I can feel for you. Scratched and dented my door on garage pillar a few years ago.
A tip.... drive head on into garage, pop the hatch and climb out from the boot....  :nerd:

But first make sure that the garage is tall enough for the boot when open.... I made that mistake a few years ago too..!

That would be so much worse...
Thats smug feeling of coming up with a genius plan to not scratch the doors. Then offset by the horror as you take a chunk out of the boot!!!

Oh and stealthwolf, im sorry about your loss

My garage is just wide enough for my car i have screwed camping mattresse's all the way down the driver's side wall. I can only get out of the car if i park within half an inch of the buttress this leave's less than 1 inch when closing the garage door the recaro seats also add extra difficulty getting out of them.
I am used to this procedure now iv'e got the time down to 2 hour's and a new clutch every 6 month's

You might think it's funny but once I did successfully park into the garage, I got one sister to close the garage door (so no one could see) and one to open the boot and fold down the rear seats. Had to take my shoes off but it wasn't that difficult!

Been there mate

Dunno. Need to have a good look at it and see what the damage is first.

Should I get the dealer to do it, or should I attempt it myself? OR an independent garage (haven't found a decent one round the midlands).

Yeh sure am! PM me and I'll give you more details. Looks as though you'll need both doors painted as they will have to blend. Don't worry, my bodyshop have plenty of practice with your colour

Donut! easily dun though. the best was a few years ago when i bought a 6 month old clio, it was only a 1.2 i ragged it to sh!t when i drove it. took it round my mates to show him 2 days after having it proud as punch (was only 18 at the time), he lived on a small holding at the time with his parents, anyway his old man turned up on his 'mule' which is like a quad bike with a cab and trailer and didnt see it parked by the house cos it was dark and reversed into it! he made a hell of a mess on the front end, the trailer bit went all the way up the bonnet stopped at the windscreen, turns out he thought it was abit of resistance from a log or sumthin on the ground and put his foot down  :undecided:

that was 1000 pound worth of damage on  2 day old car!!

hope this makes you feel a little better!

If I took the car back to the dealer, would they be able to do anything about it?

Car is on PCP - should this kind of thing be reported to the dealer, or do I just go private and keep hush about it?

I have to be the first to say this.... But that will polish right out

Is the scratch to the metal? Perhaps get a detailer with a polisher to work it out?I removed this: (Head on with another car)

To this:

Ok not the same section but the paint looked the same and that with a measely Orbital Polisher.

Maybe try it?

Mike

It appears to be scratched to the primer, rather than any bare metal. Does look like something that can be painted and polished but I want it to look like nothing had ever happened.

The stupidest thing is that the only reason I tried parking in the garage was because I was worried someone might key it themselves - managed it myself. Looking around, there are a few new audis and civics parked around here.

UPDATE:

Well after being charged an arm for the repair, I've now had my ED30 returned to me. Took it outside in the sun - only the fact that I know it's been resprayed makes me think there's a difference. Visually, there isn't.

Will post pics up tomorrow. Didn't want to tempt fate today.

*Hugs ED30* I missed you
