Just posing a question to everyone:
Is it acceptable to modify the car and get it how you want to look, but not want any big power?
I ask since a cousin of mine just had his first child, sold his imported civic type R, and bought a bog standard 1.4. From there he changed some of the looks around and left it at that. He's getting some stick from his mates for being all show and no go, but the point was that he didn't want the 'go' anymore.
Personally I have no problem with it. What does everyone here think? Would doing the same with your GTI be a disgrace :undecided:?
-
Providing he doesnt drive it like it is a CTR, yet again I can imagine people trying to race him every now and then..and he cant show them whos boss in a 1.4
I personally wouldnt do it as I love my POWER and it would drive me crazy not being able to show these people whos boss.
Alot of people have show cars but being on a GTI forum, I think I speak for alot of us here...WE LIKE OUR POWER

I'm not too bothered with it, but some people are. I used to have a 55 civic sport, which looks like a type r but is only a 1.6. I often was told it was a wannabe type r etc but i couldnt afford the insurance on a type r - i was only 18 when i bought it! The thing I think is too much though is if he was to pose it as something it's not - ie putting the red honda badges and type r logos on it. I see a lot of golfs around with monzas and the occasional gti badge on - when they are clearly not, and i guess now i have the hot version (not the copycat) it does grate me a bit. to be honest he can do whatever he wants, but he will have to be prepared to take a little stick from some people - how much stick he gets will depend on how much of a 'type r' he tries to make it.

I don't see anything wrong with having "all show and no go". My youngest daughter for her first car got a 1.2(60PS) Polo Match. When I ordered it for her she thought Candy white wasn't possible as the brochures etc say it's Gti only but,I ordered hers in Candy white and also got the dealer to fit Gti skirts, front grille,Monza's,gti pedals, gti door sill protectors. When we went to pick the car up at the beginning of march she was under the impression it was a Flash red Match she was getting.
Just to see her reaction when she got a white car and first impression it does look like a Gti was worth the effort. She gets a ribbing from her mates about how slow it is but, she's not bothered about that cos not only does her wee car look good it costs her £1400 fully comp to insure (in her name)and it goes further than a Gti on a gallon of petrol. When she's got a few years driving experience behind her then I have no issues with her having more power under her right foot but, until then the 60ps Polo will do her just fine.
Said Polo and it's definately all show and no go.

Jimp, are you talking about making a 1.6 golf look like a GTi ?
-
Personally I think your a bit silly making a car look like something its not, but thats just me. There is nothin wrong with putting your own wheels etc but when you try and make it look like something else i think its just wrong.
-
i personally think the polo looks great! only issue i have is badging it a GTI
mod'ing the car to make it look nicer is acceptable but mod'ing it to look like something it isn't seems wrong
-
Yeh that Polo does look sweet!
It seems to be the thing manufacturer's are doing these days. They have a 'sport' badged model that has the same engine etc as the rest of the line up, so in my opinion you should go for it. I also have an issue with something being badged to make out it is something it is not.
-
I think that polo does look great, except the dodgy number plate!

They were fine as its all OEM VW parts, they charged an extra £20 on the premium though..i personally think the polo looks great! only issue i have is badging it a GTI

The badge was removed that day as I'm not a fan of fake badging either.I think that polo does look great, except the dodgy number plate!
In what way is the number plate dodgy? apart from DE font?

....I think the same.
Do whatever you want - it's your car, but don't be fake.
I prefer the Lupo GTI to the Polo version.

Apart from the font? Thats the problem, its totally illegal and you could get 3 penalty points and a fine.

Yep, like i cant stand the number of old sh!tty bmws around these days with M badges on - who believes that people are gona walk past and go 'wow he's got an M3!' when you've clearly got a 10 year old giant turd
-
....I love that expession: "You can't polish a turd!"
-
you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter
the polo looks realy good
-
I like that Polo, its done in very good taste.

It may get me a £30 fine for the font if the Police officer was having a bad day but,no points I'm afraid.
I believe some guys forget what it was like to be 17 and having your first car? Most of us did things to our first car which we'd like to forget no doubt

I even "jacked" my Mk2 up so the rear was high, using 2 metal strips either side...
Mind you, I was young, fit, and got a LOT of pussy female attention as I was the only guy our age with a car! Everyone else pee'd their wages up against the wall (got drunk every Fri/Sat/Sun)
Those were the days!

Theres no excuse for running plainly illegal plates, but then its your problem I guess if you want your daughter to get a fine and look stupid.

Easy there tiger you only have to give your opinion as you say it's there choice.
-
The pic of the red MKV in the LM's thread that I posted up is a typical car that is "all show and no go". The guy who owns it has lavished time and money on a motor that now looks lovely, but with little power. Sometimes you don't need the power and the look is what counts. Other times it is the other way around. I like the Golf 'cos you can choose whichever way you personally want to go and it doesn't matter as long as the person who owns the car is happy :nerd:
-
....And you can have a bit of show and go.
-

I'm not making any excuses, and your 100% correct about the choice part as well.Just as well we still have freedom of choice in the UK

Not if your 17 years old and your old fella insists you insure your own car instead of him insuring it to get the price down
At the VWF on Sunday there was a young lad with a Mk5 (red with Oettinger kit and wheels)typical where a youngster gets their car looking great but,it was a little 1.4.
First impression you think " f**k!!! bet that can go.Cos you think it's gonna be a 2.0t.
Really nice car the lad had and so long as they're happy who cares what us older lot think anyway?
-
....
Perhaps now is the time to let everyone into my very well kept secret..................................
You all thought that my Mk5 was a highly modified Stage1 GTI. Well, it is a Mk5 but not a GTI. It's a bog standard 1.4 diesel - A sheep in wolf's clothing.
-
and mines a Bluemotion really
-
I think you have all got it quite wrong here..... Its all abount no show, all GO GO GO!!!
Keep it real
