got a 2001 GTI non turbo 2.0
my dad drives it, bought it brand new
it has 75k with FSH,
very well maintained etc, its a nice car, full leathers etc, well basically every option, only thing it aint got is the 20vT lump but may dad aint arsed about all that
anyhow,
had some recent probs, firstly check engine light came on, put it on vagcom and it said it needed a new sensor (cant remember which) changed this with a new part and its made no difference
next up getting a "STOP COOLANT" randomly flashing on the dash, and the temp gauge rises alot!!!, the coolent level is fine (in the middle of min and max marks on the bottle
car is in having a sevice, got a call saying basically engine could be fooked, oil is on 2 of the spark plugs and when u look into the head you can see wet (oil)
anyone know what may be going on
i called my contact at the dealers, i can have a brand new head/valves and cam for 400 quid and a new block for 1k if i need them, the garage says it will only know whats the prob once they strip the lump down
anyone else had this, just wouldnt mind knowing of any experiences.. bloody VW's...... dont get this with jap cars iv had (yep im pissed off at VW at the mo)
my old faithfull mk 3 gti never skips a beat and its over bloody 15 years old!
faith in mk 4's is low at the mo

First off the 2.0 is known for sensors etc  could be lamber sensor? There is two of them.
The coolant prob will be a faulty expansion tank cost about £10 from vw.
As for engine head gasket? Get a local garage to have a look vw will rip you off!

yeah car is in at my specialist, BHP centre, used them all our life, the head gasket aint gone thats for sure, he says he will do a compression test etc next then after that it will be engine out and stripped down
pissed off as my mate at the dealer said they had a brand new full 2.0 lump i could have had for 200 quid but its been stoled from the dealers!!

Ah no way
Shame you have had such bad luck my mk4 has been the most the most reliable car ive had -1.8T tho.
Ive done 65k in it now has 123k and worst thing to go wrong so far was the steering rack!

Trouble is............... It's a lump brought down from the Mk3, isn't it?!!
Seriously though, that could be a few things. I was thinking HG, too. Is there any 'mayonnaise' in the header tank/under the oil filler cap?
Time to find a rear-ended S3, me thinks!!!
Good luck though, pal - Hope you get it sorted ASAP & it's not too expensive. :afro:

hahah well my 8v mk 3 has never skipped a beat, this is the 3rd mk 4 we have had, had 2 GTI's and got a 150 GTTDI as a company car so i am pretty familiar with them, theirs been quite a few issues with them, alot more than with the trusted old mk 3 i have (soon to be 1.8t powered tho :lipsrsealed:)
theirs deffo no mayo or any sign of HG fault, im thinking piston rings, it was running rich a while back, then that problem re appeared
dont forget this car has been pampered from brand new, we are the only owners on it, so its not down to neglect
thanx for supportive words tho, i do love the mk 4's, but you know how it is when things go wrong :embarassed:

oh and iv told my old man to pop a 20VT in in but he isnt interested in the speed, he just likes the Good spec golf mk 4 hence why he runs the 2.0 version with all the extras
