Title: potential owner
Post by: npalao on 19 August 2008, 23:23
Hello all:

I am an old MK4 owner and loved it.  I made the mistake of selling it and getting a Mini Cooper S, which after only one year and 5000 kms is up for sale.  How is everyone's overall experience with the MK5 GTI?  Thanks.

Bert

....Hi Bert, and a A Very Warm Welcome!

How is everyone's experience? - I don't think you'll find anyone here who has a bad word to say about it! No car is absolutely perfect but the Mk5 GTI is a proven good allrounder. Jeremy Clarkson wasn't lying when he said you could gently take the kids to school and then scream home like a rally driver and later go and pick up a chest of draws.

I've had mine 3 years and done 51,000 miles and I'm still grinning and I still turn around to admire her every time I park and walk away.

A Cooper S?? Noooo!!  I've had my GTi for about a month now and I'm still finding absolutely pointless reasons to go out driving. It really is a great car, enormous fun but also really practical. I couldn't recommend it more highly (so far!)

Do it - you won't regret it.

Great all rounder and most things to all men (and women :smug:) who drive one.

Other cars may be better in some areas, but the MkV GTI is a solid performer with no significant weaknesses.

I upgraded from a fiesta and it was such a phenomenal difference.

I've driven a merc, a volvo and even a vw polo, but none of them were anything special.

Hi Bert,

I too came from a MINI to a GTI. I only had the MINI for three months as I was absolutely sick of it. It was a new car, and it broke down three times in the first month, and to be honest I just got p!ssed off with how small it was. You think it will be ok, but when you live with it day in day out it becomes a total pain. I do, however, miss the fact that mine had every single John Cooper Works Accessory on it, and as a result the car was pretty much a carbon fibre playhouse

Things you will notice from going from the MINI to the GTI:

1.) The MINI is a lot more chuckable than the Golf, i.e. it will change direction quicker, the steering is lovely, it feels much more light and agile
2.) The MINI has less body roll, and doesnt dive/dip as much as the Golf during hard braking
3.) However, I find that from point to point the Golf feels quicker. Down a B road it completely matches the MINI and in some cases I think the Golf has more overall grip than the MINI
4.) The Golf demands far more respect from other road users than the MINI did
5.) The build quality of the Golf is far far superior
6) The ambience of the Golf cabin makes you so much more relaxed than when driving the MINI

Overall - there are pro's and con's of each car, if I'm honest I do sometimes miss how light and agile the MINI felt. The Golf sometimes feels a bit cumbersome and heavy when changing direction (nothing that some suspension mods can't cure  )

But it terms of the total package the Golf wins everytime - it really is an all rounder, with so much to offer, and in that respect I don't miss the MINI at all. I think back now and honestly can't imagine myself not driving the GTI - you will see what I mean when you drive the Golf.

............................plus MINIS are owned by a lot of girls and the forum was rubbish.

Couldn't agree more with the comments above. I have come from a Merc to the GTI and love it to bits!

It is responsive, fun and sleek (wish the wife was like that)

You will also like the boot - in other words it has one, unlike the Mini!!

I do miss my mini,   .... I have to say it.  The way it cornered was absolutely fantastic.  I would also have to say that, in my own experience and opinion, that the build was better and the plastics and the interior of the mini also had a slightly more quality feel to them.

I do agree it was a crap forum however....I did like the way you could browse each users own library pics of their cars though....

Overall however, in terms of sheer power and performance I think the mini-S was a class down from the Golf ....and...you don't get DSG with a mini!

Okay, back on topic

I love my GTI (ED30 flavour) and will be keeping it......forever!

It is the only car you can go anywhere in and it will fit in....from a top class hotel to the roughest council estate  (although I wouldn't like to park mine in the latter :lipsrsealed:)

I agree completely...It's just great as an overall package- throw in the DSG and it's a win win situationi if you ever find yourself in traffic regularly.

Love it

Handles well, goes like poo of a shovel and draws the attention from the ladies

Was speaking to a friend that works for VW and in his words 'you've bought a sh!t hot car, better than any R32' he really disliked the R32 for some reason. He currently owns a Cooper S aswel.

Well, things look like they have not changed since I left VW.  I love my Cooper S, but quality is the worst in a car I have ever owned.  I just called the dealer to order my 09 DSG!

....Not worth waiting until October in Paris to see what the Mk6 GTI will be like?
