Title: 25th Anniversary Alloys
Post by: euroscot on 18 August 2008, 16:19
I'm away to buy one but when looking at some of the cars some appear to have silver wheels and some have a chromed appearence. This is both on the silver model. Is there 2 options or are the wheels just dirty in some pictures lol?

The bright silver ones are prob refurbished wheels as the factory originals the lacquer peeled off for a pass time!!

Possibly but there seems to be an awful lot of the ones that looked chromed.

No possibly about it........................  VW warranty replacement wheels all came back in a plain silver finish as they/BBS could no longer guarantee the chrome finish.

I'm almost certain that any wheels which are still chrome, will now need a refurb. due to pitting/corrosion (if you're fussy).

I spoke to someone today who told me that genuine BBS wheels can never be re-furbed to exactly how they were produced.  apparently they cannot replicate the colour.

You can get close to it but it will cost you.

When we got the Mk4 Anni last year it was still on the original wheels which were well corroded, luckily after a small fight with VW Customer services and some spacky dealer staff I got the complete set swapped FOC !  Ok they dont look as good as the chrome finish but they look so much better than white wormed wheels!

Pic here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neil.gibbs3/images/Anni/whiteworm.jpg) of what ours looked like

Yea this is right, Originally they were chrome but due to a slight error  unfortunately they went more silver, either from VW or reconditioned out of warranty.

Because it was a reoccouring problem not a batch prob the colour was then changed I believe.

My mate had it, went through 3 new sets of BBS under warranty before he sold it on. The car was a Beaut tho!

It was a shame but the Polo gti had exactly the same laquer problem, one small stone chip on them then the water used to get in and it went downhill from there

Really nice wheels tho, theres a chap on here who re'cons them then sells them on, loads of finishes available too

So I'm guessing its a bad idea buying one with the chrome wheels? What if they appear fine though? If they were going to corrode they would have done by now, right?

Yea should have done by now, best to ask if they have been refurbed at any point in time, it may not appear obvious in photos but you may turn up and theyre peeling all over the place, but the owner will prob say well they all do it (Which is true)

Best just to ask before looking Id say

Yeah I will ask but if he says there fine and no signs of corrosion and they are the chrome ones I would think they must be ok after 6 years.
