Title: Down the slippery slope - no way back! Thanks!
Post by: SKAVIA on 15 August 2008, 19:17
Had my 12mm H&R rear spacers fitted today so just thought I'd share a couple of pics with you all as a way of thanks!
Defo think it helps the rear look squatter.
Since joining this forum I've had the Ed30 lowered 25mm (thanks to JoesGTI's springs), K&N panel filter (thanks to GAZBUTMK5), REVO'd (thanks to various!), Sharan stubby aeriel (thanks to MerlinMan), Black VW badge (DIY), GTI seat inserts (thanks to Gulf) open fog surrounds (thanks to MartinW and Robin), Philips H7 bulbs (thanks to Neg) and now the rear spacers (recommended by JonathanTurner).
All I need now is a Kenwood DNX 7200 (thanks Hurdy!) with all the trimmings (missed out on 4 on ebay in 3 days!), stiffer ARBs and better brakes. Also thinking of getting the outer rim polished on the pescaras.

Thanks to all forum members helping me spend my time & money!

I've resisted for now as the standard exhaust sounds better after the remap. Lets see how long that lasts!

Yeah about that - I paid £80 inc fitting and longer bolts.

hi , do the spacers have the hub part for the wheel to locate on to ?  any problems ?   think they look good could be my next mod !!

Yes they are hub-centric spacers so they have the 'lip' for the wheel to sit on. You just need the longer bolts to secure the wheels. Strange how 12mm can make such a difference to the appearance!
Go for it! One of my most satisfying mods...

yes, the H&R spacers are hubcentric, they have the flange in the centre just like your original hubs

Post by: SKAVIA on 15 August 2008, 22:02
Yep, exactly. I got the garage I bought the spacers off to do it just so I knew I had the right type and size of bolt.
Unfortunately I can't advise as to what bolt is right or not but www.montyswheelsandtyres.com will be able to help.
They supplied and fitted mine.

I was thinking about having this done when I had the brakes done. I think now I will try wider wheels/different offset instead.

SKAVIA - you still have the Forge DV, CAI, HPFP, Intercooler and of course carbon fibre bits to add too

do you think fitting these spacers to the front as well will cock up steering geometery etc ?????????

Yes, if I was to go down this route then 19" BBS CH all the way. Painted same colour as the pescaras with a stainless machined lip. Nice to try to keep the OEM look.

lol - Cheers Hurdy - you've caused enough damage to my bank balance as it is!
Oh go on then, maybe just the Forge DV as it's advisable after a remap...!

....I know that spacers help the appearance and that it's very important to fit hubcentrics, but I've always been a bit wary of them - Am I worrying about nothing or is there a downside?

IIRC, AP Racing advised me against fitting them with my big brake kit.

Not sure I know of a downside RR. Hopefully there are none - maybe T_T can enlighten us?
Too late now anyway as I've bought them and I like 'em!
I made sure I went for a quality set so any possible downsides would be eliminated.

I've fitted 10mm front and rear to the S3, I think its important to get good quality ones, cheapest isn't always best. Its just like changing the offset of the wheels really.
Title: Re: Down the slippery slope - no way back! Thanks!
Post by: RedRobin on 17 August 2008, 13:49
....From what I recall from AP, the potential weakness are the longer bolts. But I best have a chat with them again.

You're absolutely right not to buy cheapo for such things as spacers, gaz

I think 10mm may be too much for the front tbh. I left my front as I think they fill the arches enough. Also, they're the driven wheels and also steer so I thought best leave them be.

....I'm here! And also very interested in the answer to your question.

I think that McGuards offer different length lock bolts but I'm not sure. I use both stock and McGuards!

Hi - yes had to buy longer locking bolts. Only come in packs of 4 so have got 4 spare now!  2 for the front and 2 for the rear Now that is a bad point!
Title: Re: Down the slippery slope - no way back! Thanks!
Post by: gazbutmk5gti on 19 August 2008, 18:23
Yes mcgards do longer bolts, be careful with the std VW locking bolts I was led to believe there are only about half a dozen different combinations.I ran 2 sets of mcgards on the ED30 when I had the CH's on.

Not the cheapest mod then!!!  Now wheres that number for the manufacturer of our own 15mm bolt on alloy spacers.........

Just a little market research, if i were able to offer a pair of 15mm bolt on spacers for £40 would you still pay £80 odd for the H&R's just because the name is better known??

....It depends on how well proven they are and if hubcentric. Spacers is not something you want to get wrong.

i would have some at that price as longas they are hubcentric and what about locking wheel nut bolt?

Exactly - I saw some cheaper options but went for the trusted brand.
Also think 15mm may be too wide as 12mm sit just right.

Like the others said, if they are hubcentric and a nice snug fit that would be a great price, I might even try some 15mm for the rear at that price

They will definatly be hub centric.  To give you an idea, i have attached a link to the Citroen spacer we currently sell.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/15mm-Alloy-Wheel-Spacer-kit-for-Peugeot-and-Citroen_W0QQitemZ140244581065QQcmdZViewItemhash=item140244581065&_trkparms=72%3A1090%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I can get them to make it exactly the same as the one listed meaning the Golf would change to nuts (supplied with the kit) or i can get them to make it so that longer bolts would be needed. (Personaly i would change to nuts to avoid longer bolts).....

If people are definatly interested send me a PM and i will see if i can get some dimentions over to my supplier.  This will not be a quick turn around (sorry) as we have just received our latest order that could last upto 4 months...

Hope this is OK with the Mods, im only mentioning it as its been on my mind for a few months for my own car..

Ben
