Title: Vacuum pipes question
Post by: Diluxe on 15 August 2008, 13:53
Just a quick question(s) guys, the bit i've circled in red, what is it supposed to do? and the thick black pipe that comes of it  to the left if looking straight at it from the front of the car where does that go; to the brake servo?, how can I make sure this has connected at what ever the other end is connected too, I tried to have a look yesterday , but it just disappears somewhere in the area of the servo.

Also If anyones popping out to lunch and can check , if you start your car up & turn the throttle manually can you hear a rushing of air, is this a leak somewhere or is the just the throttles opening up & sucking in air?

yes the other end runs to a hole on the front of the servo.  you will hear a rush of air if you open the throttles :)

dont know if I have a vaccum leak, but if i start the car up with out touching the accelerator it idles lovely and starts on the button, as soon as i touch the accelerator pedal the car dies, i've replaced the cable makes no difference, I pulled the 5th injector out and its not spitting any fuel out on start up, what voltage should I be seeing at the blue plug & should it be constant?

cheers

5th inj isnt that important, doubt it would make the car stall.  sounds more like a fuel delivery or spark problem, unplug the main elewctrical plug from the fuel pump under the car and turn the key 1 click to check the in-tank lift pump is working.

yep I tried that this weekend and changed the fuel filter, the lifter pump is only a  slight hum incomparison to the main pump.........

yeah that sounds fine to me, have you touched the ignition system since you bought the ncar?  my gfs ax would stall when you tried to accellerate, new cap arm and sparks sorted it.

yep its got new bosch cap & rotor arm aswell as spark plugs......

it dies as soon as I move the throttle switch , but if i take it further so i start opening the throttle its ok, its only this area of dead space in between in the throttle movement... i assume that once i'm off the throttle switch the isv is no longer functioning?

hmm, have you set it up as per the 16v timing & idle/co guides?

yep many times, red lead unplugged on coil etc all with no change

also i've been looking at new fuel pumps as mines done over 230K miles, GSF list the same for 16 & 8v, but if you look on ebay sellers specifically will say on a 8v advert not for 16v?

the gsf one is a k-jet pump which fits both 8v & 16v k-jet models as they're the same, but not digifant models :)
ideally you want to get the fuel pressure checked to confirm if its the pump, if it was me I'd swap the fuel filter 1st as its easy n quick!

well i cleaned out the ISV & bought another WUR of ebay

attempted to start the car and it was so lumpy I thought the engine was going to come off its mounts, adjusted the mixture screw clockwise the revs picked up & it idles beautifully.

any idea why i needed to adjust the idle mixture after changing/cleaning those two items?

if i turn the idle screw clockwise am i enriching the mixture?

yeah clockwise raises the co mixture, either the old wur was making the car run too rich, or the new isv is allowing more air through it?

i may swap back to the old wur and see if i have turn the mixture back down, what i did notice is the car doesnt feel as lively now, theres a bit of raod near me & i struggled to hit the same top speed over the same distance, so somehow I seem to have lost the enrichment top end or the advance, I seemed to have cured one problem but created another ...........................

can anyone recommend a garage in the Berkshire area that will fuel pressure/flow test?

i may swap back to the old wur
Hi
You are keen ! How many new washers will you have to use to reconnect the fuel pipes to the WUR ?
Have a look at the back of the old WUR and see if you can see the hole having been drilled to alter the fuel pressure.

what there where washers on the fuel lines

yeah checked that as soon as i got the old one off, to see if the WUR mod had been done it hadnt, I was going to put the old wur back on too see if i still had the original problem, I noticed something else today, i can hear a whistling noise from the replacement WUR sounds like its coming from the air hole on the front face of the wur , the one with the plastic cap on, is this supposed to make a noise?
