I'm new here so sorry if you have all answered this one a thousand times. I'm looking a definitive answer on the badging of the Mark IV GTI's and GT TDI's. I've seen many variations such as GT in silver and red TDI, or just a red I etc and what I'd like to know is how the badge relates to the HP variations, eg 115, 130, 150.
I've heard a lot of different people say a lot of different things about the badging, some seem to think that a red I means a PD150 and others think its a red TDI. I recently bought a Mk IV GT TDI PD 150. Its badged simply as GTI with the GT silver and the I red.
Does anyone know?

Welcome to the site, sorry I can't answer your question as I've often wondered how you tell what from what, so I'm waiting for someone to answer this properly too ;D

This has been a topic that has raised its head sveral times, and we have yet to find a definative answer!
Every time we think we have it nailed, someone else comes along with a car that blows the theory!
I have a PD150 and it was badged as a GTI (silver G and T with a red I) but some PD150 owners have it badged as a TDI (all letters in red).
From what I have been able to understand, the 115 is badged TDI (T and D in silver, red I) the 130 as TDI with T in silver and D and I in red) and any PD 150's badged as TDI's are all in red.
Hope this helps a bit!

I have the GTI PD150 and mine's badged as just all silver GTI. No red "I" Confused?
-
So the upshot is that even VW aren't even sure what badges to put on then ! ;D
I guess they just grab whatever are around at the time then by the looks of it, my, that's handy ;) Hang on, maybe mines not actually a GTi, might be a GL - lol
-
Maybe its a security feature to confuse steal-to-order theives!
-
lol - Aye, probably right, it would confuse me should my career have turned out to be a steal to order thief ;D
-
Was thinking of removing my GTI badge and replacing it with an SDI one???????? ;)
-
Its to do with cars that was imported from europe where they had the red i, an ones from here had silver i, but the dealers were supposed to be replacing the silver i wiv the red i, but usually didnt bother!! something like that anyway, its def no more special if you have a red "i" just someone being lazy!
-
??? Well,
mine's a GTTDi 115 with the T in silver and the Di in red. Rest of the car is in green. Which is a shame.
-
Thought all imported 150's were all red "TDI"?

This is what i know (from Evo or some similar magazine ages ago). It only mentioned the 1.8T variant and not the non-turbo models.
2.0 launched on the continent, and was duly labelled so.
1.8T launched on the continent and labelled as GTI in silver letters.
Both Models made their merry way to Blighty and the labelling remained the same when they were rolled out of the factory regardless of their final destination.
2.0 owners over here wondered why they weren't motoring around with a GTI badge (after all, previous 2.0 model was labelled as a GTI). Consequently due to all the requests, a lot of dealers started rebadging 2.0 as GTI (in the same silver letters as the 1.8T), even to a point (correct me if I am wrong, I could be way off here) that the 2.0 was referred to as a GTI in some of the literature.
Of course this threw up the problem of how 1.8T drivers distinguish their quicker motors from the 2.0, hence the introduction of the red 'I'. So now dealers had to rebadge the 1.8Ts when they arrived.
And so it remained...apart from one thing, there was no official instruction saying the rebadging had to be done. So that's why these two models kept cropping up with the 'continental' badging; It was either down to the laziness of the UK dealer or maybe they didn't have the letters in stock.
As for diesels, I know the UK likes to have it so the 150 is GTI (red I), 130 is TDI (red DI), 115 is TDI (red I) but I'm not sure how they are originally badged at Wolfsburg. I'm sure there is every chance that the 150's are originally badged as an all-red TDI (I've seen a number of 150 Bora's with all-red TDI badges). as for the 130 & 115, who knows.
Wolfsburg definitely have a method for the badging, albeit a confusing one due to a number of different engine variants. It's the UK dealers who make it a load more confusing!

The standard uk supplied VW Gti tdi pd 150 (ie, the 'standard' 150bhp diesel) is supplied with a GTI badge on the rear with the 'I' (only) in red. GTI because the car is based on the petrol GTI floor pan, red 'I' because that identifies it as the diesel model and not the petrol model. regards, yt.

The badging on GTi's has confused us at work for years.. We've had a lot of Mk4 GTI's at work and heres some examples -
A 'S' Reg 1.8t 150= all silver GTi
A 'T' Reg 1.8t 150= silver GT, red i
2 x W Reg 1.8t 150= all silver GTi
An 02 PD150 GTi = silver GT, red i
An 03 Reg 1.8t 180 = silver GT, red i
so it does seem to be down to inconsistant dealers badging the cars!
