Well i must say I didnt see this coming.. but yesterday after going out for a meal with some friends.. i was dropping off my first passenger and when he opened his door we were all greeted by the an absolute stink of petrol!! So after thinkg something is not right we all jumped out only to found to smell of petrol to be so strong.. we couldnt stand near the car (and i like the smell). After a short while I began sniffing round the car to try and locate where it was coming from. It seemed to be strongest from somewhere near the air filter (right side of engine bay). It got so bad that even my aunt was asking why we all stunk of petrol... When thinking back I had noticed that the car was feeling a little sluggish.. but assumed it was just due to the extra load. But obviously not!
Without wanting the car to blow up I decided the best thing to do was call VW assistance and leave the fault finding to them. The RAC man came out and was very helpful (former VW tech)... but still could not find a fault, even with the VAGCOM thingy. He suggested that it could be something lodged in the exhaust after checking the fuel pipes and vapour box thingy. He said the best thing to do was to take it to VW and they would be able to look deeper into the problem. Looking to buy a R32 himself he did say that in his last few years he had never come across any major issues with the 3.2 lump except for coil probs in the mkiv's.
So today I went down to see what they could do for me... 5hrs later got a call that it was all fixed. When I got down there to ask what they had done... they couldnt tell me! Obviously I asked for the techician to come out and explain to me what they had looked into. Some smart a$$ at the reception desk had forgotten to tell him about the small issue of the petrol smell. tbh he was really helpful and said he would get to the bottom of it, but not right away and the car would have to be re-booked in for a good couple of days for further testing.
Still seems slightly down on power and i am definately concerned about a slightly louder than usual hissing sound when rev'ed. Which I am told is just the air rushing into the engine. Have driven it for about 15miles since.. and not had the smell come back, but I am concerned that its a little flat thru 2nd and 3rd.
Anyone had anything similar??? Help! HELP!! HELP!!!!!
p.s. Mr Megane maybe waiting round the corner

This sounds like a job for
da da daaaaa

Only time I've had a problem with any of my cars fuelling was when the fuel filter leaked. This too caused sluggishness and an overpowering smell of fuel. :undecided:

Cheers Hurdy.. was hoping TT was lurking somewhere. Had all the fuel lines checked and they seem fine, inc the vapor thing. Strange thing is that the smell was strongest at the other side of the engine bay. Dont think it would have smelt much stronger if someone had poured petrol over the engine!

Hope you get it sorted.
I had the fuel pipe come off in my MG once. The pump was piss*ng petrol all over the inner wing and it was just flowing all over my right leg!!!! Put the pipe back on the twin SU carbs and off I went. The passenger was ordered not to smoke!!!!

Iv had the O2 sensor go on my old MK4 (dont know if this is going to be of any help) which caused the fuel to run rich thus giving a really overpowering smell of petrol like you explained. I would have thought something as critical as that would have popped up on VAGCOM diagnostics.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

Got any Pics of the location where you think the smell was coming from?

Just spotted this over on car scoop. And seem like a similar problem to the one I had!!

Did get the car into the dealers but they couldnt find anything wrong. As I said previously it hasnt happened for a while but have noticed a strong whiff of petrol on a handful of occasions.
When it does occur I usually find it strongest if I get out but leave the engine running.. ??? :undecided:
Anyone else had anything similar??? :embarassed:
