I'm always thinking of ways to mod and improve the interior of my car and when I saw the pics of the A3 Club Sport interior I noticed that the inserts on the side of the centre console were painted white and looked pretty cool, I thought silver would suit the interior of the GTi. OSIR make a carbon fiber version but at around £150 for some stick on pieces I thought it was a little steep and wouldn't have the same effect as bright metallic silver…still cool though.
German Ebay is a good place to look for VW mods and I found someone selling nicely finished inserts in silver at £70 including delivery from Germany. I decided to see what my local bodyshop could do them for, £60+vat was the first quote then another place quoted £40inc vat so had them done over the weekend and fitted them last night. They painted the inserts with plastic primer, smoothed the surface down and finished them in bright lacquered metallic silver, the finish is absolutely perfect and just what I was after. I applied a good layer of wax to help protect the paint and I think you'll agree they look pretty cool!

Looks good and as you say - much cheaper than CF

£40? you're off your head.

Gear stick thingi in the Audi looks very cool...very very sporty!!!
-
Yep I likey
Anything to brighten up that area as it is really dark! Like your ashtray lid to! This is another case of them looking alot better in the flesh, when your taking in the overall look against the rest of the interior. Nice work

I take it you think thats expensive? You obviously don't realise how much work is involved in getting a good finish on a cr@ppy plastic. When you think what painters must be charged out at by the hour i think it's a bargain.
Thanks Greenouse, the R32 ashtray was the first thing I added

Nice mod - simple. cheap and effective.

That looks great, well done you for doing something original!

Same here, first thing I did to mine was replace the black plastic ashtray lid for a silver one from an early GTI. Does brighten up the area a treat

Yeah I would have liked a silver ashtray cover for mine but the previous owner stole it!

I like that. I might talk my dad into it yet... Maybe start modding his Pajero again
I must admit the dash is very dull. Our car does not have the silver lining on the radio. So its a all grey :undecided:

Iv'e got the scars from the engine cover
So you priced up those inserts from VW yet so we can get some sprayed?? :smug:

Hahaha, how did you know I would be pricing up this mod already! Am I that predictable?

go on, how much then?
...I was just about to ask if a forum member was handy with a spray gun
Those stainless steel ashtrays from early GTi’s are like gold dust you'll only get one from a breakers yard these days as they were discontinued, so you were lucky.

Im afraid I won't be painting it myself, I have a friend who owns a bodyshop! Didn't know they were rare  Got mine of Fleabay for about £20

it's a thumbs up from me i likey :afro:

I fitted a cover when I got mine. Got it from VW. The colour is slightly darker, its a perfect match for the DSG surround

I really like the look of the R32 ashtray. I take it that it would be a straightforward addition to the GTI?

Great mod lsc. Maybe a little too bright silver for my liking, but i will definitely look into this myself!
-
Looks fantastic .
In reference to the silver ashtray, I got a sticker from ebay for a few euros and put it over the plain black ashtray and it looks great. When it gets very hot an odd bubble might appear but I just flatten it out in a minute and it's back to looking mint .

Funny you should say that, the bodyshop offered to match the colour of the Pescara's and I agreed, then as I was about to turn the corner at the end of the street I bottled it and turned back...got them to do it bright silver as the idea was to brighten the interior. Would be interesting to see what it a darker colour would look like.
Thanks for all the positive comments, makes modding that little bit more rewarding

Yep it's a 15 minute job to take out the ashtray, unclip the black plastic trim and re-attach the R32 trim. You need to pull out the plastic trim attached to the base of the gear stick gater revealing 2 torx screws, undo these and the whole ashtray assembly simply pulls towards you. Unplug the cables attached to the lighter socket tyre monitor & ESP switches (make sure the key isn't in the ignition so you don't trip any warning lights) and swap over the trim.
Check out this thread which helped me http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=40936.0
You need 2 separate parts, the R32 'engine spun' ashtray lid (part no. 1K0857351B8B4) and surround (part no. 1K0863487B8B4) these cost me £70 after I wangled a 10% discount which works out cheaper than VW Speed.

Love the look of the inserts but can't help thinking they'd be nicer if they were chrome trim like the other bits of the ED30. Hmmmm....gotta get a siggy.
-
Good indea on the inserts, the CF OSIR's look a wee bit tacky for my liking.
Be perfect if it was a brushed alloy look like the GTI insertsa on the doors etc...
-
lsc, that's a nice little mod. Could you provide a link to the seller of those inserts please? I presume you take out the originals rather than glueing a cover on? Also, which bodyshop did you use? I'm going to look at doing this. I reckon a brushed aluminium look would suit my R32. The cabin is very grey and could do with a bit of tasteful contrast imo.
-
I did the ash-tray cover the other day £7 it fit's like a glove and is a perfect match with the brushed alu look on the door trim.
Cant argue for 7 quid.

Looks good TC
I may have missed it from earlier in the thread, but is £7 the price for the ashtray lid from the stealers?

No it's the price for the vinyl sticky thingy i have been looking into vinyl for a different mod so i bought this to see how good the match was with the door trim, the ashtray replacement is stainless steel although it look's good it wasn't a match.
-
Arrrhhhh I see, still looks good for a piece of vinyl
My old MK5 GTI (05 Plate) had just a brushed alu ashtray lid but plain black plastic surround (which I believe matched the door trims etc), I just though you might be able to still buy these? :undecided:

heres the link to German ebay http://cgi.ebay.de/Mittelkonsolenblenden-Silber-Golf-5-V-R32-GTI-Jetta-Eos_W0QQitemZ250273010503QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item250273010503
Not sure if it was just a one-off as the seller doesn't seem to have an ebay shop. Yes the originals just unclip. Not sure if a bodyshop can replicate brush aluminium though otherwise I would have gone that route myself. I'm in Scotland so doubt you'd be able to use the same bodyshop.

Yep, you can get both the surround and the lid. It is darker than the early GTI lids and does not have as much of a "brushed" finish to it. I don't have the numbers on me at the moment. But I did get them off a posting on here.
-
Here you are.
Part numbers 1ko-857-351-b-7av & 1ko-863-487-b-7av.
Pretty sure they are the ones, check with the parts guy at the dealer. *They are darker than the dashboard trim*

mine has the brushed alloy ash tray aswell, came standard on early models.
