I have put this in the styling section aswell but seeing as its about a mk4 i thought id put it here too:
Hi guys,
drove into work today in my fairly recently bought mk4 1.8t gti and a guy who just got back from hol and hadnt seen it before said "nice, is it a 1.6s?!". its standard so i admit it looks abit bland but not that basic. the most annoying thing is he actually knows quite a bit about cars! :sad:
Anyway, does anybody have any sudgestions as to what to do to make it look better, more special, more GTI? I am on a tight budget also.

What a dunce. Colour coded bumpbers and rear GTi cluster should have given away that its NOT a 1.6s. Clearly this guy doesnt know that much about cars :D
Front GTI grille badge is nice a cheap from ebay. How tight is your budget?

A big improvement to the exterior of my car was when I got the front & rear lower valances colour-coded - totally transformed the car.
You're gonna tell me you've got a black car now, aren't you?! :grin:

It depends on how you want the car to look. I was all for fitting genuine GTi Anniversary rims on my Golf but then thought, I don't want people to think I'm trying to look like an Anni because I'm not. I'm going for BBS CK's instead :cool:

Just buy a GTI key ring, and stuff it up your mate's arse. He won't be mistaking your motor for a 1.6 again.

surely if he knew anything about cars he would be able to tell its a turbo gti by the wheels as well. I've only had mine 2 months and brought some german style plates. IMO i think they look really cool and lots of people have commented on them. Apart from that mayb get a spoiler or gti front grill bade, both fairly cheap.

took about 2 weeks to come tho as they are actually made in germany, think you can get them of ebay and other vw sites. Paid £30 and they are a good, cheap mod which makes the car stand out that little bit from the rest

Maybe you can answer me another thing about whats standard and not. ive got an electric lilt/slide sunroof and full recarro interior, were these standard?

what year is your GTI? Recaro's were standard until 2001.

any real olf fan will no its a gti im sure it has badges an that and if not the speed should be a good give away if not invest in a dump valve :)

do what toph says, at the end of the day its your car and you enjoy it, subtle mods will help but do it for yourself not just 4 him

Think you guys are right, ill have a look this weekend for some nice new rims and some lowering springs. keep it nice and simple.
