Title: Multistorey car parks
Post by: stealthwolf on 13 August 2008, 22:11
At work, have to park in one of these places. Absolutely hate it since the entry/exit ramps are really narrow and you have to go very slowly.

I have to drive so slowly that to avoid stalling, I drive around most of the carpark with the car in first gear and the clutch slightly dipped. Surely this can't be good for the car or the clutch, so what should I be doing?

I don't want to drive so fast that I smack into something or scratch the car!

Surely if you just let the clutch out completly you will only be coasting anyway? Thats what I do around the CP at work as it has a 5mph limit.

Clutch slip is bad for the car and (unsurprisingly) the clutch. Once you've engaged gear you should move off and get off the clutch. You can go surprisingly slow in 1st without compromising the engine/transmission but to ride or slip the clutch will do it no good - equally you do not want to labour/stall the engine, so the ideal is somewhere in between.

I fully concur though - do not kerb those alloys

Can you not park elsewhere - might be worth it in the long term.

I hate taking mine into the multi-storey car parks in Luton, they are so old and dated as the ramps and bays are so narrow.

Rather than starting a new thread, is coasting down a hill going to damage the clutch, gearbox in anyway? (in neutral)

I hate car parks full stop. Someone in an old banger parks next to you and swings their door open..because they dont care about their car they dont care about anyone elses. Barstewards.

If it's a manual car then it's fine. But if you have DSG then it is a big NO NO  :nerd: you will damage your box

The worse thing about the multi storey near work is the bloody high kerbs , no idea why they need to put them there as theres no pedestrians allowed on the ramps, and all they do is damage alloys

Whys that TC? I could have left my DSG in neutral for ages coming back through France?

Nope - all the roads nearby are either 30mins or 2hrs max parking time with no return same day. I'd end up having to trawl for a parking space so often, I'd never do any work!

I'm still not quite used to the dimensions of the car so have no idea where the front or sides are and so have to slow right down to be able to maneouvre without scratching the car.

TT will give you the Tekkie reason why but continually doing this FOOK's it
I first read this on VW vortex before i even got my car. I think RR also know's why, mr Egbert Nosh was also encouraging peep's to do it at one point when he was being a bad boy.

I seam to remember it was something to do with lubrication.  :undecided:

Like you said TC I am sure T_T will have the full technical answer that is likely to make our brains hurts again.

'Tis also stated in the Manual, page 104 of Booklet 3.1 Controls and Equipment (of mine anyway )  , quote :

"Never allow the car to roll down mountains or hills with the gear in neutral, N.  This applies both if the engine is running or not running"

and in the Tips and Maintenance Booklet

"If a breakdown truck is used, the vehicle must be towed with the front wheels raised"

Good job I had read this before the AA wanted to tow my last DSG GTI away in neutral.  Had to wait 3 more hours for a bigger tow truck !!    :embarassed:

BTW the above is referring just to DSG cars if any manual owners are worried

Think I read somewhere too that the DSG box is only lubricated properly when the car is in gear, and that when coasting it would not be getting full lubrication.
