Ok ive had it, Im fed up of driving a slow piece of sh!t CL, I just lost ?150 to a 1.6 Corsa!!!, The fact it outpased me on the straight is enaught to make me vommit!!! He was even on my A S S all the way down the corners.
Im not stuck with two options, Go nissan, But a rear wheel drive 200SX, Turbo its lump and bend over the table and let my insurance company analy rape me
OR
Do some serious turning to my Mk2. Im gonna be working over time over summer inbetween college, So im gonna have around ?1500 - ?2000 and its ALL going into my golfs performance, No asthetic bullsh!t, Im talking torque, Handling and horsepower. Somthing to wipe the smug grin off the corsa boys.
So far the cars a 1.6 CL with a rallys backbox, and a custom carb, Its got new springs all round with a 40mm drop and thats about it as far as performance goes, The cars already stripped down to its bare bones, I just need more power. If you had ?2000 to play with to make it faster where would it go?
Best answers will see there ideas going into my car around september :D
-
stick a gti lump or even better a g60 in there!
-
and not tell the insurance company ;)
Any idea how much a swap like that would set me back??
Woot, ?100 for Piper cams for my 1.6, 6BHP increase ;D
-
Sell the cl,
get a MK1 GTI, Filter, Exhaust, Head, insure as a classic, bye bye sh!te c@rs*!!!! 8)
-
i kinda agree.. get a better starting block to build from...
-
I agree with Old_Boy get a Mk1 GTi, you will be laughing then! ;)
However if you want to keep the CL, make it lighter. Get everything out that may weigh it down. Every little bit helps.
-
whats that old performance mantra..
"there's no replacement for displacement" ?
i.e. get a big fat engine to build up from.
not sure what the insurance would be like... but sell your car, and you could put all ya cash into a mk2 16v...
-
i had a subaru impretza 2.0 Turbo 2001 all day yesterday. im thinking of leaving the golf scene its soo fast :o
to be honest i think uprated air filters are bullsh!t. grab a gti for ?1500-2k ???

Gotta agree with the last few comments posted, that you need to consider changing your base vehicle to give you a better starting point - Currently you risk spending your whole tuning budget to end up with a car that probably wont be as quick as a standard Mk2 8v. Consider a change, and you will still have pennies left over to modify your new base car.
I appreciate that insurance is going to cost you, but if you play by the rules, its going to cost you as much insuring a modified car with all your mods declared as it would insuring a car thats quick 'out of the box'.
I don't want to sound in any way hypocritical or patronising, but if you can't afford to run the car you're wanting to create, then its best to bide your time and build some no-claims until the insurance is bearable (well, as bearable as it can be!) - unfortunately you can't have the car you want without paying the insurance on it.
If you go for a MK2 you can transfer a lot of the cosmetic its and bobs you've already fitted to yours, and your ?1500-?2000 can cover the cost of your base vehicle and your insurance increase.
-
Get a gti cam from a scrappy.
Will give you a few extra hp for a few quid.
Don't expect miracles, if you want a fast car then go buy a gti :D
-
I agree with what's been said, you deffo need to change the base vehicle that you are using and get the basic car that's already quicker and then do the mods, you will get stung on the insurance on your CL with mods anyway so there's no difference.
-
You should also stop betting ?150 :o when racing in a cl. Save this money and get a gti.
-
Only advantage of keeping the CL would be that it would make it easier to hussle people... otherwise bin-it.
-
It looks like i might be going for a 8V or a 16V depending what insurance says, Then spending the remainder of my money on fixing up the car, Transfering all my mods off the CL AND uprating my insurance ;)
How much does a 8V usally go for??
-
How long is a piece of string...
Tell me how much ya got n where u live n I'll find u one!!
-
MK1-MK1-MK1!
As it gets older, it gets lighter and quicker-RUST! ;) ::)
-
How much does a 8V usally go for??
Just do a national search on autotrader to get an idea, there will be an assortment of different prices.
-
Im looking to spend around the 700-1000 mark ;)
-
I'm sorry. you deserve a slap Fielder.
Why on earth are you trying to challenge people to races in a CL?
Go buy yourself a 16v. You'll feel much better with yourself.

There's loads on autotrader for less than a grand, some that need work doing on them are a few hundred beer tokens. You may have to look around for a good one but there's loads nationally and if you look on autotrader within about 20 miles of where you live I bet the search throws out a couple that are local that you could have a look at. :)
-
......oh yeah, just to re-iterate what a few have already said, stop racing cars for silly money when they are the same size engine as yours but half the size, physics matey ! ;)
-
ironically, I would of had the corsa except the final stretch of mountain road was a straight and we exited the last corner fast, This ment that the CL lost out on the high end, I was leading the whole way untill that last straight :-[
The reasion i work on my car is to race, the CL WAS the fastest car in my price range at the time, Hence why i race in it, Besides, Its not 100% about the car ;)
And thanks for the links to the cars, Ive just been talking to my insurance group, I want to stay with the CIS because they dont push up your rates if you have asthetic mods, They want around ?1500 a year on a 8V in mums name provided she swaps her car insurance too them as well. Any idea if thats a good deal?
-
As if by magic ! There's a thread in nonsense that a few have said what they are paying, have a look at this link

I insured my first car at 17 with CIS and have had a quote from them for every car i've had, and in my experience the reason they don't push up the rates for mods is that the rates can't go much higher.
I'd try shopping around more. I would expect you could get an 8v insured for less than ?1500 in you own name.
Also, be careful if you do use your mums name, i knew someone who did that and when she crashed, the insurance people wouldn't pay out cos SHE couldn't prove she wasn't the main driver of the car. So it can be a bit dodgy and also the best way to lower insurance premiums is not age but NCB.
-
If she couldn't prove that she was the main driver of the car how could they prove she wasn't??
-
My Polo is insured in my mums name, with me named as the main driver. I think that this is what Fielder means. MUCH cheaper ;D
-
:) yup
-

LOOOOOL :D
-
If she couldn't prove that she was the main driver of the car how could they prove she wasn't??
They couldn't but they still refused to pay out. It was unbelievably unfair. That's what made her very angry, if insurance was fair we would all be paying ?200 and they wouldn't get out of paying out on stupid technicalities.
I used my mums name for the first year of driving, then this happened to my friend so i decide to go on my own.
I think what happened to her is rare but it's still a risk.
I was under the impression that the policy holder has to be the main driver. If this isn't the case then definately go under your mum (no incest jokes please).
-
Should ask if your the main driver....
If u let them insurance companies will take everythin. Wen dealing wi them at work we call their bluff and they always end up payin. Its worth payin a bit extra for ins though. Makes things a lot easier shud anythin happen....
-

Noooooo!
I used to be with CIS and to be honest i wouldn't recomend them.
Get a few online quotes and I bet you can get it cheaper than ?1,500 in your own name.
My first quote from CIS on a gti was around ?3,000 tpft im paying roughly ?900.00 fully comp now with elephant.
CIS are the worst insurance company for young drivers in reasonably fast cars.
-
Getting ins under your parents names is great, BUT it means you never get your own no-claims... given that your first year or two of car-ownership is most likely to be in an old banger, that will mean that when you want to and can afford to go for something a lot quicker, you have the NCB (hopefully!)....
-
I Dont know if you know this already but try Asda & Tesco for insurance

-
I Dont know if you know this already but try Asda & Tesco for insurance
i get 10% off at tescos too because i work there ;D
On a side note, I won my money BACK off the corsa driver, Ill post how it went later, Im buisy with somthing (involving my annoyin EX >:()
-
a 1.6 Corsa GSI will stay with both the mk3 and mk2 8v's.
U need a 16v or a vr6 ... or a SEAT IBIZA CUPRA 1.8 20V Turbo (heh heh luving this car)
-
and about 10 grand for insurance ;), If i had enaught money for a newer model golf i would go japanese and get somthing with AWD or RWD.
I got the corsa back, Same track, a long downhill road just outside of hearts through the countryside.
Started off side by side, His cheap tires loosing him grip (as usal), Hes on wolf race 17s (heavy) and stock suspention (loads of roll), It was pritty damp tonight so i had him off the line, About 150 meters ahead of the starting line is the first corner, Nothing too heavy, I was able to hold an inside line without loosing the arse off the car, I found tapping the break before the corner helps to shift weight onto all 4 wheels and keeps your grip up, The corsa however kept sliding its arse round every corner, Which as we all know on a Front wheel drive car will only slow you down,
After that it was just a case of keeping infront of him, Taking inside lines and holding speed out of the bends, On the final straight where he got me last time however he almost got me again, This time it went a little smoother, Theres a hair pin bend just before it, Instead of sliding the cars arse out with the hand break and trying to keep the outside line i breaked heavly into the bend and crept the left side of the car just over the white line at the edge of the road, Kept the inside line then let the car correct its self with a little under steer on the way out, This ment i dipped inside and kept it there all the way round before the car leaped out, cutting up the corsa who had enterd the corner first and was sliding its arse out on the outside line, Came out the bend at about 30-40 while he came out in a very low gear (guessing 1st or second from the sounds of his revs) and must of been around 15-20MPH, He also started wheel spinning while accelerating, Just after we got to the finishing point he flew past me, I won by about 2 car lenghts ;D
My ?150 is going straight into the "But Fielder a Mk2 8V 3 door in september Fund" ;D Yes ive decided. Im taking the leap to a 8V ;D
-
costs Blu ?1900 for a mk2 8v. :o

I have been with CIS for three years with my Octavia and i have tried every insurance company to better them, I cant!
A lot of people say the proof of the policy is in the claiming, well try this......
Brand new Octavia, parked outside my work place, three days old and some w@nker decides to put a key down the side.......
Police were utter sh!te, didnt even come out, just gave me a crime number, CIS had it repaired to as new condidtion within three days of me claiming, I think the service speaks for itself. :)
