Finally got the Eibachs fitted today
Not lowered by much as the drive and speedbumps around my way are horrendous.
I must say though, the difference between the standard and Eibachs is superb. Been out for a blast in the car and I could tell straight away that there was more control AND that it soaks up bumps a lot better than standard. The ride quality has actually improved and traction is better too. VERY IMPRESSED.
Whilst they were fitting them I went for a walk to Gilders and saw this:-

The first Pirelli I've seen really close up. I don't reckon much to the seats and yellow stitching but I'd have the alloys please!
They also had a 3dr white ED30 DSG in the showroom and were still advertising them
Also found out that Gilders will have a Scirocco in the showroom from the end of next week
Here are a few more pics. I thought it rude not to get a few pics whilst the car was up on the ramp. The last one really shows off the Milltek and if you look carefully at it you can see the ARB.

Brilliant stuff Hurdy! any pics to show the hight it now sits at??

Only took one pic so far as the car is dirrrttty :embarassed: Not very clear, but I'll get some more once she's clean again

It will settle a bit yet pal, I was always impressed with the eibachs on the ED30, great for the price
-
Looks good, how much were they?.
-
Is that the before Shot Hurdy? Where's the after shot?

That's the "after" shot. I told you I didn't have it dropped by much
-
My front splitter is 11.5cm from the floor with my Sachs coilovers

£300......originally! I bought them off a guy on here and the rear dampers were leaking slightly, so had to wait for new dampers and then fit, so cost £700 fitted.
At a guess  this site does them for £644.26

I think the ride height is just right.. esp if it will settle a little. Judging by the picture there is no one in the car either. Nothing worse than a car that is riding too low

I've had them laser aligned already. Surely they won't alter that much will they? :undecided:

Looking good! Not sure about the Pirelli's
Damn i'm tempted with those springs......... better start saving

shame on you Hurdy look at those exhaust tips :embarassed:

They were clean when I left the house....honest :embarassed:
-
Might be worth getting it checked again after a week ot two - if you get the same place to check it and it doesnt need altering they dont normally charge your anyway so might be worth a blast just in case.
-
I'd say get them checked again in a couple of weeks, they will settle 5mm or so. Think your right at about 700 quid fitted
-
Think I did well getting a mates garage to fit my lot for 100notes

got a mate who will fit stuff for a pack of biscuits
-
hurdy, id lower it a little more and then get it laser aligned, also you arse end looks higher than the front, leave it for 2 weeks to settle then adjust them so all gaps are the same under each arch and then get it laser aligned.

I'll do it for half a pack - wont be that good mind you

When they did the final measure they took the distance from the bottom of the alloy to the rim of the wheel arch as the measurement and they were all the same.
They may settle a little as a few have said and I'll be keeping my tape handy
I went for a minimal drop at first to ensure the speed bumps, drive etc are all cleared easily. I can then get jiggy with the spanners to lower bit by bit until I'm happy. I don't want a rock hard ride and so slamming it is out (maybe for the odd show or two )

Just thought i'd bump this one back up i'm looking at getting some in the near future i thought coilover's advantage was that they had seperate dampening aswel as being easily adjustable or am i getting confused again.

the ride height is adjustable but the damping is fixed pal

not sure of their advantage mind - i assume that they are obviously stiffer and react quicker in order to give better car control :undecided:

I'm sure that Bilsteins have independant adjustable damping with 9 settings :nerd:. PSS9's or maybe PSS10's I believe now :undecided:

They are the ones you won aren't they?
How are they?
-
You can get damping adjustable coilovers but they will a lot more expensive than the eibachs, which for the money are pretty good in my book, standard dampers and springs really are built to a cost, so any upgraded damper should give an improvement. I was worried that the coilovers would give a harsh ride but there's nothing in it, if anything the eibach coilovers are better
-
If you ask me now, I would say that the ride is the same apart from the rough edges of the standard suspension are smoothed out.
ie you hit a rut or a lump in the road and the Eibachs smooth the trainsition better at both ends of the change in road surface, whereas the standard suspension jolts more at each end.

Yeah, loving them :)
Improves the car no end imho.
The ride height is a little low, as I said the front splitter is 11.5cm and that only gives me 1.5cm clearance over speed bumps (assuming they are built legally  with a max height of 100mm). So I might consider raisin them a little.
It makes the car look a lot more agressive and I parked right next to a standard Ed30 the other day and it looked like it was on stilts.

Can I bring the topic back to coilies?
Does anyone else have any opinions of other makes of coilovers for the MK5?
I have seen some very positive reviews from other VAG based car forums on these - http://www.v-maxx.co.uk/viewproduct.asp?id=98&m2=114
I know the normal rules of you get what you pay for etc, but they are TUV approved and come with a 2 year warranty. :undecided:

I have been doing some research Steve P from what iv'e read it seems to be how long a coilover last's rather than ride quality. unless your putting it round a track of course, If you click on the link on my coilly thread which everyone has ignored  there is a salt test on there showing corrosion on various types, if you do high mileage and change your car regulary imo they may do the job.
-

....I read it - KW's are the most resistant to salt spray in the tests.

Cheers TC, sorry didn't see your thread originally.
I do quite high milage and have previously changed my car very often but with the ED30 I believe I will be keeping it for at least a few years (unless the MK6 GTI-R does become a reality ).
What's made you consider the KW's over other brands if you don't mind me asking?
And is a salt spray test that important to sway the decision making process?

I think you have got to decide what you really want, if your looking for just a better stance and slighty better handling then spring and shock's would suffice IMO.
IF you do occasional track days or like me like to go away for a couple of days driving place's like the welsh hills then it's advantage's to be able to adjust it my self to suit and also fun experimenting trying to find what suit's my driving style. Dont get me wrong im not trying to kid anyone either i would like to go lower in general the asthetic's are important to me aswel.
In answer to your question's.
And is a salt spray test that important to sway the decision making process?
Not really important but if there on the car for along time they might become difficult to adjust at home without regular maintenance something which your average joe probably wont undertake.
What's made you consider the KW's over other brands if you don't mind me asking?
My reasoning for possibly choosing these is they have seperate damping again giving more choice on setting's. Also have a great reputation for quality and mr TT got me thinking the other day about the effect's of even small modification's on VW design so i want the best i can afford and that could possibly be KW coillie's all in my humble opinion of course.
-
Cheers TC, your comments all make logical sense.
My desire is to find a solution that improves the stance of the car (but not to slam it to the ground) plus give some improvement in handling without affecting the ride quality to much.
For my daily drive probably just a eibach spring kit and some arb's would suffice but I want to be do more with the car and will be doing the odd track day and traveling a bit through europe on a couple of driving holidays in the future.
Anyway on with the research. :nerd:
-
....I agree with your choice, Top Cat - Having adjustable settings allows an expert such as APS, Ray West, or VWR to set it up as best for your driving and use and you can then leave it alone. I'd go for V3's for that reason - More for an expert to play with.
Although we all like the low look, it's silly if you don't consider the handling of the whole car. I followed a slammed down GTI on the first part of the journey home from Inters on typical B-roads, nothing extreme, and he could only go slow and built up a huge and impatient queue behind - Pointless except for posing. Stupid to rip up your tyres on the wheel arches too.
-
its all about bilstein if you can afford them.... they are the milltek of the suspension world, i think its bout £1300 plus fitting for a set of p10's which give you all the adjustability you will ever require for all situations and easy to adjust too.
looking on this forum I have not see anyone yet who has them but very popular with usa and germans.
I drove a mk3 gti with full bilstein when I had my milltek fitted to my ed30, was a courtesy car, and was so much fun around the bends.
i don't think the handling on the stock gti is too bad, where as the breaks are so i cant make up my mind on what to go for breaks or bilstein!
decisions decisions :smug:
-
....Absolutely right about Bilstein being considered the best - Much more expensive though. Ray West's advice to me when we did my suspension was that Bilstein was overkill just for road use. I drove his road & track Mk5 GTI with them - Excellent.
-
Ive had the eibach Pro-Street-s and now have the KW Variant 3's.
I like the Eibach coilovers, although have been told they felt over sprung and under damped. They were a nice comfortable ride.
I upgraded to the KW V3's for the ultimate track performance. These are significantly harder ride, but as yet havent had a chance to test the performance on the track.
-
I quite fancy the sportline coilies...they don't take the car down much but I believe they stiffen the ride a little to make cornering more fun.
I plan for this to be my next mod.
-
DanGB what car do you have, that's a mod list that put's Hurdy to shame

Ah, not as bad then  :lipsrsealed:
-
I pulled it out lol!
It does still cut out and hesitate sometimes, but the most likely cause is a faulty intake manifold runner do da. Its a common problem with these engines, so much that VW have a technical bulliten out apparantly. Ive just had the codes come up regarding the fault, so will take it in to get replaced.
-
But goes really well rest of the time?, how do you find putting the power down through the front wheels, I was struggling at the power/torque levels the ED30 was at, how you goin on?
-
car looks very nice just the right height

Mr Hurdy have your collies settled down any, and have you been to have them re-checked.

I measured the gap the other day and it has reduced by between 5 and 6mm, so not settled too much. I haven't been back yet to have the alignment checked, but I'm still debating another few turns of the screw to drop it maybe another 15mm.
