you'll have to build  your own door pods for the fronts as the original speakers are tiny in a mk1. same goes for the backs. best bet is a set of 6x9's on the shelf. after hearing Rich's this works even if the shelf is down.

Andy,
I have fitted a range of speakers in my cab.
I have -
In the front doors - 15cm in the pockets (late cabs have bigger pockets to fit speakers( and tweeters in the door cards
In the rear cards - Kenwood 6x4 - direct replacement for OE
speakers
Parcel shelf - 17cm speakers, but will soon be moving them to a custom boot build.
Boot -two 8" subs, and a range of amps.

As you can see, there is plenty of scope for speakers, its just a case of tailoring to what you want.
I went for quite a large set-up so as I am still able to hear the stereo when the roof is down.
