Hmm, a bit off topic - maybe not . . . anyhows, just found this:
http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/Low-Rolling-Resistance-Tyres-to-become.htm
The meddling fools in the EU want "Low Rolling Resistance Tyres" to become compulsory fitment from 2012. So basically, that means no more Mich Pilot Sport PS2, or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric, and the likes. Just imagine having to run your Golf GTI on Michelin Energy tyres!
Petition Brussels, anyone?
-
I imagine that on the more powerful cars (porsche and the like) performance tyres will still be an "option" when ordering the car from the dealers. It's all hog wash really.
The article doesn't state whether the LRRT will be obligatory on new cars or on all existing cars. I would think on new cars (like the requirement for Day Time Running lights). Therefore there would still be a market for the PS2 and F1 tyres.
-
The way I read it, is from 2012, all NEW cars must have them fitted, so that would include Porks and the like!
I agree there is nothing about existing motors though!
-
By 2012 petrol will be £5 a litre, road tax for a 1.2ltr car £1500, Insurance £2k, congestion charging at £1 a mile on all motorways (and £2 in city centres) and the only cars you will be able to buy new are poxy little cc cars, electric cars, hybrids and :sick:diesels. So having energy efficient tyres will just be another nail in the coffin TBH.

fooking hypocritical Brussel bar stewards
they want to look at reducing their own emissions which IIRC according to a report a couple of months back the average CO2 emission from their vehicles was well over the 220mgs/km mark!!
i say burn the fooking lot of them

....Fecking Hell!!!!     - Five Star Anger!!!!
As said on the link : - "Lets see what happens to grip levels with the new breed of ultra hard tyres. It's great to know you'll be saving 3% of your fuel as you're sliding into a ditch..."
Stoooopid!! And will Jo Public maintain inflation of their tyres to correct pressures? - I ain't holdin my breath!

ive herd it all now :undecided: :undecided:

Just think of all the CO2 that'll produce!

Actually, some of the current "energy" types of tyres arn't too bad. The current Michelin Energy and the Conti EcoContact are both good tyres - but only for cars which are suitable for their fitment, and drivers who want to use them.
But what are they gonna do for hot hatches, sports cars, etc. It's a typical narrow-minded, blinkered approach from them tw@ts!

Couldn't agree more. The amount of cars I see, which have clearly uniflated tyres, really does anger me. If I can see them, so can the "boys in blue", but how many times do people get nicked for underinflated tyres!
On the very subject of tyres, my RS4 drivers handbook still has the two "sets" of tyre pressures - one for "up to three peeps, with no luggage" (or sommat similar! :undecided:), and the other for "fully laden, five peeps, and a bootful of Burberrys finest suitcases". However, the manual now recommends running at the fully laden pressures at ALL times, even if your are on your tod! They cite this on the grounds of lower rolling resistance, for better fuel economy, and basically only advise the lower standard pressures, if you are a namby-pandy, and want a slightly softer ride! I must admit, I've always run my cars at max pressures for quite a few years now, and don't get any adverse wear. In fact, I've found that some of my acquaintances who run on standard pressures tend to wear out the shoulders, particularly on front tyres. Probably all that twizzling the "power assisted" steering whilst stationary. In my day, before PAS, you needed to be Charles Atlas to do that!

....I'm going to take your advice and inflate mine to the higher pressures given on my fuel cap label. We used to inflate our 20 mm wide bike racing tyres to the max!
I had you down as more of a "Pop-Eye" character than "Charles Atlas", T_T

OK, but if you do, just be careful for any subtle changes in handling. If you have run them at the standard pressure for a while, then the tread will have worn in a certain way. By inflating them a little more, then you will be using the tread blocks in a everso slightly different way. You may be lucky, and not notice anything, or at the other extreme, you may think they feel a little "light-footed" on the road. This should sort itself after say 500 miles, when the tread wear has adapted.
Incidentaly, I've discovered that the pressures are the same on the GTI for the manual and the DSG. Not really correct, being as the DSG weighs more.
Just for info, I run the GTI on 42psi front, 37 rear - for one or two peeps, and 46 all round for filled to the gunnels (my wine replenishment runs to the continent ). Standard psi's are 35 front and rear for upto three, 38 front 44 rear fully laden. And the space saver needs 61 psi all the time!

....Strangely enough I have found that since becoming divorced about 5 years ago (and I was totally faithful), women seem to come to me first without me chatting them up at all. I reckon they recognise that I'm older and 'safe' and a gentleman. I won't go into detail but they mostly tend to be in their 30's but one very sexy and very pretty angel was only in her mid-twenties - I couldn't believe my luck because I had spotted her a couple of months earlier and really fancied her big-time and then out of the blue one day at a gig I was playing at I came off stage and felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around and there she was!! She even insisted on buying my CD (and did more than just buy my CD). My flute playing tends to touch some females.

Yup, but then I am really heavy on my brakes (which explains why I got through a set of pads AND discs on my last S4 every 6-7k miles  - and why I got ceramics on the RS ).
The rears are only 2psi up on standard, though!
What are the standard pressures for the R32? I'm guessing they'd be more than the GTI, being as the 32 has a heavier kerb weight.

Its probably because you are more relaxed and chilled. Having a SWMBO is very fookin stressful, and it probably shows in those of us still under the kosch! :embarassed:
And I bet you love it when the layyydeees ask for a blow on your flute!

A friend of mine, inspired by his not-ugly model girlfriend (now wife), started a model agency based in London and specialising in 'ugly' people - It's now a huge success!

....Yes, I definitely feel relaxed and chilled and don't care less about whether I have a girlfriend or not! Been there and done all that. Most women know, don't they!
The young lady I mentioned was definitely She Who Must Be Obeyed during the time I was with her and it was delicious and with no strings attached - I enjoyed letting her take the lead. I look forward to bumping (and grinding) into her again one day - We did a lot of dancing. Sorry, I'm getting carried away with sweet memories! You've gotta let an old buck like me enjoy his memories. I'm waaaay off topic (as usual!!).
