i have read most of the topics on this but none really pin point any thing thats happening to me!
this is what happens, start her up move 2 miles then the temp gauge is 3/4 and higher. no working rad fan, no lose of coolent and no steam.
i normally just turned the heater fans on full and on top heat to get it down and that worked but now it wont send hot air in at all.
some times the fan comes on randomly when over 3/4 on the gauge mostly when turned off.
i have changed the thermostat which has done nothing. unsure please help.

That sounds like air in the the cooling system.
Search how to bleed the system. Think RJ has a guide :smiley:

if it doing it within 2 mile I'd suspect the temp sensor or wiring is at fault, if no other symptoms of overheating present themselves. do you have an MFA, and if so whats the oil temp?

its hot its self, after a drive theres a lot of heat coming from my engine and a nice smell. i dont have mfa.
my ideas was to replace the rad because it might be blocked or some thing. but i know nothing?

have a read thru my coolant faq, its either under mk2 maintenance or the garage section, covers how to bleed, check the waterpump etc etc.

is there a way to check the water pump for correct operation.

did your coolant system operation. found out my rad has a small leak. i have lost coolant hopefully the rad leak. fan works, prob with the thermostat it didnt opens untill i turned off the engine at about 3/4 on the temp gauge is that ok? i dont think so.
and you rock rj your like an internet mechanic.

aha, stuck thermostat, bad! do you have pas? if not its easy, if not its not so easy :grin:
follow the rad hose to where it connects to the front of the engine, this plastic flange is where the stat is located :)
edit: did you check you get a nice spray o coolant to the top o the header tank when the engine is revved?

ohh really are europarts- parts that bad, because i changed it like a week ago. i dont have pas.

You should check a thremostat in boiling water before fitting to make sure it opens - it could be a duff.
Before you take it out again, are you sure you've properly checked for air pockets in the system? Run the car up to temp with the expansion cap off, squeezing hoses etc. etc.
Repeat this process several times, allowing the car to cool with the cap off. Also, some people have had to hold the tank up in the air to allow gravity to force the air bubble round.

new stats can be bad aye, next time check it in a pot o boilin water to make sure it opens. if you get a good strong spray o water from the thin hose to the top of the header tank when you rev it the waterpump is ok, need to check this from cold with the cap off.

I had the exact same symptoms on my Audi A4 last week, turned out the water pump impeller was spinning on the shaft! it was still pumping water, only not enough as the engine speed increased, new pump cured it...

ill check the water pumps tomorrow and if thats ok ill take the thermo out and cook it ! and if thats fine ill do what? new temp sender, rad and then car!
