Title: sideskirt glue
Post by: finlayjacobin on 09 August 2008, 14:49
Hi, next week I am replacing my black GTI sideskirts with painted R32 ones, I nkow there are screws at each end and clips under but there is also a strip of double sidded tape/glue fitted to the skirt below the door.
I was wondering what people who had refitted there skirts had used to replace this as my VW are unable to get a partnumber and do not think you can buy it? I was thinking maybe clear silicon?
Red Robin I know you have changed yours?

....Hi Fin

The TTshop did mine when they were also doing the carbonfibre nose. They used a glue which needs 24hrs to cure and I drove over 200 miles home with masking tape holding it all tight! Phone 01234 853 225 - they are very helpful. Feel free to mention my name - Everyone knows me as RedRobin .

problem is I kinda want it to be semi perminant so I can change them back to standard original black plastic if I decide I dont like them painted or when I decide to sell which is why I was just thinking screws clips and clear silicon sealant. as this would just peal off.
any thoughts?

its used alot on marine Boat applications and would be really hard to remove once on there, do more damage if your planning to remove skirts later, not quite as hard as no nails but near as dam it.

Hey Kidfrost, no they are not new ebay specials! new R£" skirts cost a fortune!
Yeah I know they have padded double sidded from new I sat there and screpped it all off before they were painted so I would not scratch them once they were all red!

I fitted new R32 skirts to mine but when I got them back from the bodyshop one of the foam tape backing strips had been peeled off and the tape had lost its stickiness  After peeling the foam tape off I too thought about silicone but didn’t think it would last. Didn’t want to use a glue as I intend to put the standard ones back on at some point. In the end I used double sided foam tape as this is what they use anyway. I didn’t use the normal white foam tape as I thought this wouldn’t last long once it got wet. I used some dark grey/black tape similar to what was already on there and cut it to size. This was about 9 months ago and no problems so far.
If you do this you must leave the tape backing on. Position the skirt and peel it off while the skirt is pressed in position. Make sure you've got it in the correct position cos you only get one chance..

Thanks for the info kidfrost, very similar situation then!
Problem is there are many different foam double sidded tapes for many different aplications, but yes it needs to be waterproof, I have got some trough my work which is designed to fit mirrors with but do not think it will be waterproof.
