Open bonnet, look under windscreen and remove the tray with the 4 screws holding it?
It's probably broke. Replace with new and job done That cover is £5 from Vw and pollen filter is £15which i replaced. takes 10 minutes aswell!
DO IT ASAP BEFORE IT BUGGERS UP YOUR ELECTRICS!
Let us know how you get on!

and and if its the pollen filter it will come in to the driver side of the passenger footwell from behind the dash.

No problem. It buggered up my electrics for a day when it happened to me.
Let the car run after fixing with heaters on and doors closed to dry it out.
So was the panel broken?
-
No,screws a bit rusty but panel was OK,took the opportunity to get into the wiper mecanism to lubricate and clean out any debris, had a dehumidifier running all night in car to dry out carpets worked good, only problem now, after replacing passenger seat, remembering all plugs etc,AIRBAG warning light stays on does this need reset by VW garage, thanks for the help...

try disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes, if not you need someone with VAG COM to clear the code

I've noticed that after it rains, my car steams up quite a lot inside...
Is this normal?

sounds like your pollen filter is getting wet - and unfortunately it is a common problem.
don't think the cover is too expensive - PM Tim aka T_J_G as he just bought a new one

Just put a guide up mate. Really easy 4 screws.
Won't be going home tonight but the codes are on the parts you remove.
