Title: Sump & lights question
Post by: test_richie on 08 August 2008, 12:49
First my sump question. I know that the mk4 had a ally sump so was very weak and if the car was very low could hit the road and smash.

Now is the mk5 the same? Or are they cast? or not as deep as the mk4 ones?

And lights how oftern do Xenon headlights come up for sale. It is the one thing that i am missing from mine that i really want.

Thanks

The reason i didn't order them when i order the car was becuase i could not afford the leather and the Xenon's.

But after the order had closed they made leather standard meaning i could afford the Xenon's. But the order was closed so could not add them

Have you considered an HID kit? Im still not clear on the MOT compliancy however but you can have a look here. I got one for my MK5 GT TDI (which does have the winter pack and therefore headlamp washers). They are a great job.

See i had a kit like that from hids4u.co.uk on the polo. But the Polo had the projector style head light that i thought you needed to run them, other wise the light would scatter every where is this not true?

If i could get a kit like that, that would run on the current head lights i have then that is fine by me as i have no MOT's any way as the car is new.

The Mk5 GTI also has a cast alloy sump, but they arn't the lowest item at the front.  You'd scrape the bottom of your front spoiler first, and then probably the front alloy subframe and exhaust cat.

Not a good idea to retro fit Xenons/HIDs.  Even if you get the genuine headlamp unit, you will still need front and rear level sensors, headlamp washers, and the controlling ECU.  Without the complete set up, then the car will be illegal.  As for these crap kits which retro fit a HID capsule into the existing halogen headlamp - well, they are totally illegal, even if you have washers and auto leveling.  This is clear, factual info freely available on the Department for Transport website.

Your'e welcome!

An update on the headlamps - if you want to stay on the <cough> right side of the law <cough>  and want to improve your standard halogen headlamps, then www.PowerBulbs.com have a really excellent reputation for their customer service (and they also only sell top quality brands like Philips and Osram, rather than the Korean or Chinese cr@p that some of the other sites sell).  Something like Philips X-Treme Power H7 should give a noticeable improvement over the standard Philips LongLife H7 bulbs - as the actual design of the reflector in the headlamp is one of the better designs.

If you really do want to go the whole hog and fit the entire OEM Xenon set up, then here's a link to show what you are up against - http://furmanka.blogspot.com/2007/12/mk5-wiata-ksenonowe-z-samopoziomowaniem.html . . .

Staying with the furmanka site, an interesting solution for your sump concern - http://furmanka.blogspot.com/2007/05/mk5-dolna-osona-skid-plate.html

Well said TT, I have the upgraded Phillips bulbs from Powerbulbs and are a million times better than the standard "candles" VW supply.

If you are feeling a little sadistic then Kufatec sell a retrofit kit -

Yup, but don't forget the headlamp washers too.  IIRC, it is addressed as J431 in VAG-COM.

BTW, did you look at that furmanka site?  Talk about an obsessive modder, he's nearly up there with Robin!

I can take a snap but your much better off with a comparison of the old a new so you can see the diffrence, which I dont have. Iv got a feeling Ryhso over in the MK4 section has a picture of before and after fitting them. Might be worth asking gim for the pics.
