so i have been using the search button to start with  and found some bits and bobs but where is the best place to look to buy the brakes? As i ahvent got a clue what would need to be upgraded etc but when looking at the re mapp side of things this has poped up and is a valid point
more power + bigger brakes
hit me

honestly mate depends what ya want i got my entire upgrade kit off ebay
you may even be able to go to a scrappy ect and get the carriers ect
-
if you're already on 288mm brakes all you need is the carriers, these new cost about the same as a full set from a scrap yard / fleabay
you'll also need pads + discs

are 288mm the standard GTi set up? im assuming ill need the whole lot? if that front and back, sorry to soudn so clueless

288mm is the standard GTI setup
your rears will be 232mm IIRC and those can be upgraded to 256mm
although most people say doing the rears is mainly cosmetic as they don't add as much stopping power as the front upgrade.

yeah i just noticed that on antoher post and a link to vagparts etc with all the prices ;)
so for carriers, dics and pads looking at about £260.50
that sound about right?

yh thats wat i apaid for my setup off ebay

Looking at this myself, is there a noticable difference from the 288mm on my GTi to the 312mm upgrade, or would better pads and drilled disc stop as good as the 312mm ??
Cheers

I wouldn't bother with drilled/grooved discs in any size. They're very expensive, more prone to cracking & wear pads out twice as quick!!
Pads on the other hand, is a different matter. Spend £100-120 on some Ferodo DS2500's (or Mintex equivalent) for your 288's & you'll probably have more stopping power than 312's on crap pads. (Obvoiusly those pads with the 312's would be immense).
The 312's definitely stop you quicker, but make the rear quite 'light' under heavy braking - You get used to it, though.
