Hey up Lads n Lasses,
My MK5 has started to rattle or knock, Im not sure which is the best word to describe this sound! When the car goes over bumps there is a noise which seems to come from the boot of the car. Now this Noise sounds a bit like say the exhaust knocking but I checked the exhauset and all seems OK. The noise does not happen on every bump in the road but it dose on most!
Has any one experienced this noise (not a squeek from the parcel shelf)?

Possibly the rear ARB's creaking a little

Deffo not a creak, the sound is similar to knocking your knuckles on the desk!

have you checked your spare wheel and jack is secure in the boot

My next suggestion too

All checked and OK, I did just tighten the wheel nut up tho as it was a little loose! The spare has not been used at all.

Rear seats. Are they properly locked in to the back fasteners. Try lowering them and then giving them a good shove back into position again. Third time lucky?

This is great.... I will be driving home, part way with seats down and no parcel shelf and then the rest of the way home with seats firmly locked into position... Results to follow!

I have it too when i go over speed bumps - slowly i hasten to add! I noticed it yesterday with the window open doing about 10 mph in a local housing estate.
I have tried the rear seats but no joy. I agree with indublin, it sounds like it is coming from outside, like the exhaust or rear wheel bearings. It goes off almost straight afterwards and is fine with normal driving.

I had something similar - Rattley tin sound. It sounded like the back plate of the NSR brake, but there is lot of heat shield round the exhaust. I think it might be stone, possibly between disc and back plate, as a day or so later reversed - lots of noise and then now gone.
Failing that - keep window closed - can't hear the noise then

This sounds the same, I can't hear mine with window down tho (well with all the fookin rain I don't get a chance to put the window down ) It is a knock from the rear and yes when I go over speed bumps. I thought I had read somwhere about a rear bearing problem on MK5's which is why I posed. Also my 2 year warentee is up just after Crimbo and I want it sorting b4 then!

I think I know what it is, the rear shelf has strings with balls on the end. I found that these would knock if driving over Dublin speed ramps at anything other than low speed. Try disconnecting them and drive to work see if that's the noise. Unfortunately there is no fix that I know of. But at least the paranoia will be eased.

No still there, but I did think this was it! You can't hear the sound with the window down, only with the window up, so I assume it is coming from the boot inside! But it deffo sound's like somthing knocking.

My car also has the same sound you're describing. Only 5 months old, and noticed it after about 2 months. And it only happens on one particular road-not on speed bumps. Also thought the exhaust was loose but that doesn't seem to be it! I put it down to one of the infamous GTI 'squeaks, rattles & sounds'
-
I had this problem in mine. Mine was def down to those little balls that pull the parcel shelf up when you open the boot. They are taped to the underside of the shelf at the moment until i can think of something better...
-
The balls werent the answer, but strangley the sound seems to have stopped now!
I guess it mat have been something around the heat shield, like a stone perhaps, that has now dislodged itself.

I wonder if the Seat may have somthing to do with it? Mine is still knocking (and really pissing me off ) I have tried everything!

Indublin, I have been driven mad by the rattles, if its the rear seat rattleing it could be the seat latch. I had mine replaced under warranty but the rattle returned. My fix was to get some heavy duty tape, put the seat down and wrap some around the metal loop the seat latchs too. Give the seat a good slam closing, I have not had and rattles from there since.
