Howdy folks,
Well picked up my red O5 GTI last monday and have stopped driving her long enough to ask a few questions.
I know its normal enough for the 2.0TFSI to sound like a derv at idle but is it normal to feel a very slight shudder every few seconds as well? I wouldn't go as far as to say its like a missfire. More like half a missfire? She still goes like a rocket so can't be anything to serious.....
Getting a few minor niggles sorted out next week like a non functioning ipod adapter  (couldn't care less if I had one or not but since I have it bugs me it doesn't work) and what I think is a slightly sticky caliper on the rear left wheel.
Overall though what a car.

Yea i get this in my 06 aswell, wondered about that myself, keep meaning to ask about it when i next visit the dealers.
Any ideas anyone?

I have felt a very slight shudder every so often, I think it's the engine saying "thrash me b!tch, I don't do idle"
-
Its "normal" You should notice that the rev needle stays completely still, mines always done it but i dont notice it anymore
-
Cool, thats set my mind at ease and indeed the needle doesn't budge. In the 1.8T that shudder meant trouble!

....Sounding like a diesel at idle has been reported since the Mk5 GTI first appeared - It's totally normal (even with a Milltek exhaust). Not a problem at all.
-
mine does it aswell and you feel it more when you have the torque arm insert in, so dont worry
-
yeah totally normal both the derv sounding idle and the odd 'stutter' through the car at idle.
-
Mine was a little lumpy idle - I didnt have a problem with it but when I had something other bits checked it was put into a test mode and where the idle was spot on, out of test its now been fine since... Almost like the idle was reset or something, I will try and find out what was done.
-
mine was a bit lumpy the other day, put some new petrol in and it was fine again

This is another possibility, I wangled a full tank of petrol out of the stealer and somehow I can't see them filling her with the good stuff. I've topped up with 99ron but maybe when there is pure 99 running through her that will make a difference. I've mentioned it as part of the other niggles so will see if they come up with anything but if not it sounds like there is nothing to worry about.

I have an 08 model with 3000 miles on the clock and at idle it has a burble that sounds more like a quiet v8 engine than a diesel.
I had a Saxo Diesel before the GTI and in no way does the GTI sound like the Saxo.
