Is there a trick to getting the pesky horseshoe clips off and on again to separate the mainfold and downpipe without resorting to a VW service tool? ???

go down to a local Exhaust place and offer to buy a beer to anyone who can weld them off for you, Then fit the exhaust back on in the forcourt (shouldnt take more than 20 mins to fit the new one on) then offer to but him another beer to wend it back for you
