Title: The rain hurt my GTI - fixed
Post by: T_J_G on 06 August 2008, 22:51
I was at Brands this evening with Alan, Alex and so on and all was good. Then the heavens opened.

So we decided to leave (as most did) and i noticed my windscreen took ages to clear so carrying on up the road my mate notices water in the footwell. I kind of disregarded due to wet feet. But it got slightly worst. Then mile or two up the road the dash lights start flickering and the airbag, ABS and traction control light come on. So i pulled over into a garage with Ridg (alex) and turned the car off only to find out it wouldn't start. We left it abit and after that it started and I continued my drive home with no dash lights and limited wiper action (though it was chucking it down)

Got home safe and now the car won't start. So going to investigate in the morning. Anyone else had a similar problem, maybe it's just scared of the thunder?!

Great, f****** great.

Thanks to Alex,Dan and Dan for helping out though.

Tim

So thinking about this if it was the grommet leaking water onto the control unit (behind ashtray) then would this affect charging of the battery. On way home if I did something requiring electrical power the dash lights would dim or cut out. therefore surely the alternator is now not charging the battery.

Have you got a multimeter Tim? Check the to see if its getting charge.

Sorry to hear about the problems, it was properly coming down last night. Did you manage to get the VAGCOM stuff sorted with Alex? (by the way thanks again Alex for sorting me out :))

Def sounds like water has got into the electrics somwhere.

i forgot about the pollen filter, which does infact sit under the windscreen scuttle, where you had the gap, between the windscreen.

could be worth checking that first, except you've got to take the wipers off to remove the scuttle which can take as long as removing the interior trim.

i take it you managed to get home ok though?

thats the real weird think about it, as those symptoms are normally down to the alternator being on the way out, unless the alternator got soaked too, and was having problems.

have you tried her this morning?

bugger:(

Not starting this morning.

Although I know where the water is coming from, on top of the pollen filter there is a tray that guides the water away that is split. So i need a new one of those and a pollen filter.

However it's still not starting, just a loud click when turning the key (from the bay). and the clocks start buzzing and a little green light that looks like a foot in a circle shows up but that's not in the hand book :(

BTW UPDATING THIS POST AS I GO

Alex can you send me the codes and descriptions it chucked up last night? I still have all lights radio etc but not starting.

Also anyone know what the plug to the right of the pollen filter is? Is it a sensor or something?

Could the immobilser stop it from starting?

Bump started for 2nd time today leaving it to run see if it charges up. Voltage across battery is 13.5V is this normal? All the lights have gone off the dash and no dimming or anything as it did befor even with air con/wipers and radio on! Started raining again though

oh i fitted my new £36 cd changer too! Jobs a good'un.

Don't want to turn car off incase it won't start up lol

Was a really good night till the rain, look at the pics in the VW related section!

Car still running off a bump! Hope it restarts later.

It's raining hard again so repaired the broken cover with gaffa tape and replaced!

i only saved your instruments, i'll get that off the laptop tonight and sent it across.

IIRC the fault was something like "light timeout too long" and the heated mirrors (which at the moment aren't going to be your main concern)

not sure what the plug is.

the immobilser could stop it from starting, but i think that would flash up on the dash will immob active or something as i doubt you could bump it if the immob is active.

just thinking is it possible that the alternator got so wet it stopped working, that caused the car to run off the battery thus draining it?

running the car on idle isn't going to get that much charge into the battery, you really need to take it on a proper run, or get the battery on a charger if the battery is flat.

One time it did flash up immob. activated but doesn't now. I may take it for a run not too sure.

Picking up new tray and pollen flter tomorrow. Filter was £15 and the cover was about £5
I've got some pics to get up.

There's also pics of yours in the VW related section mate! :afro:

don't really want to take her for a spin as i'm trying to dry it out. Though the rain isn't helping.

Anyway pictures:

Right hand side of pollen filter is soaking wet

Where the water is ending up

hen i put my hand down there on a ledge in there was about an inch of water. I also used a hose to clean the car before I went Brands so that probably added to the problems!

looks like you've found the cause of the problem, i'm guessing that once the electronics have dried out she should be fine.

i've you're running the car still, still the heaters on full as that will help dry things out.

We turned the car off........

And it started!

Alex do the store faults from the past? Or just what's wrong at the time?

Tim
Title: Re: The rain hurt my GTI - help needed.
Post by: Ridg on 07 August 2008, 13:02
the faults are stored until until they get cleared from the modules.

yours will still have the mirrors and that light one logged, last night we also checked the engine which has no faults so will be easy to spot any new ones.

Took it to work tonight left it for 4 hours and no hesitation starting! and electrics all good! So I thought this was going to be an expensive problem but replacing the tray and filter tomorrow for £20 from VW, so it doesn't happen again.

Anti-hijack and alarm bleep are cool too! And now I can listen to Cd's with the new CD changer.

HAPPY DAYS ONCE MORE!

i menat that the systems below the flimsy exterior are tough   if that much water had gotten into a French car it would have surrended and be heading for the scrapper!

Yes

I guess I've just spent £4k on a car and it's annoying when stuff like this happens. Common fault aswell

Maybe you should all pull the cover out (4 screws to right of windscreen wipers) to check it's condition. 2 minutes for peace of mind.

I shall write up a thread later so we can keep it in maintenance section for future visitors!

Do you know what, its funny you say that, mine was actually split in two. I had to remove mine to replace my wiper pump and mechanisim (another commong fault lol) and mine was totally snapped and was in two bits but I didnt think anything of it and didnt cause any problems, guess I was just lucky.

You were, the whole in mine was directly above the pollen filter. How the last owner got way with it I don't know as it's looks like it's broke when it was shoved in incorrectly. I lost a screw or two asell so had to order those!
